Oil leak and smoke

Oil leak and smoke
I have just bought a new 1994 FD and on the way home I lost the oil pan plug and had to tow it for awhile. When I got home i bought a new plug and put the oil in and started it up but when i started it up white smoke was coming out the exhaust. Is this just because there is oil in the engine and I need to run it out? Any help would be great.
