My 93 LHD is leaking a bit of oil not too much closer to driver side. I am unsure of its exact location but the best way to descibe where the leak is located, is if you look at the engine its between the alternator and the oil filler neck, So if you look straight to the ground its where its located. Everytime I shut off my car and wait 5-10 minutes there is no oil drops. Its when the car sits there for a while then you see a tenis ball diameter size oil stain on the ground. I check my oil everyweek and it seems to stay almost the full mark. It may go down a couple notch but then I fill it again. Can someone tell me if this is a major leak?


Also My car smells like a coolant smell ever since I put on a down pipe. Had is on for over 2 months and thats everyday of driving. Havent lost any coolant at all. I believe its coolant smelling but not 100% sure. I hate the smell. Been checking my Coolant everyday and the overflow and they are full. Wonder what this may be?

It may be the O ring under the filler neck. Another good place for oil leaks on the driver's side is the oil filter pedestal. There's two O rings under the pedestal.
Replace all of them, they're fairly cheap.

 

Oh ic, Are they easy to change? and where is a good place to by them? Would this explain why my oil pressure gauge reads 0 at idle and then when driving it reads at number 4 which is the middle of the gauge on Canadian FD model? About the smell, this is my first Rotary and am pretty much a newbie. I think rotary motor probably stink more compare to piston engine. The smell is hard to describe.

 

if I were you, I would'nt worry about the oil pressure gauge, because it is common for the oil pressure gauge on the FD's to show low oil pressure after 14 years. There is no problem, its the guage thats faulty

 

I took the car for a oil change today and the guys allow me to go down to the pit to see the oil leak. The leak is coming from the oil pan. The passenger side of the pan is the drain plug and the driver side of the oil pan is some type of a sensor with wire coming out of it. The oil is leaking where the sensor is. What is that called and is it easy to get at? I assume that its some type of a gasket. Let me know thanks

 

That's the oil level sensor. Typically you just need to replace the o-ring.

 

Do you know the size of the o ring? I called a few places today and they wanted me to take out the old o ring to match it up with the ones in the store.

It's going to have to come out when you replace it. You may as well pull it out and see if they can match it.

 

I just replaced the one on my car, It is an oring and a small diameter one too. I would recomend you get one from Ray at Malloy mazda in Virgina. His number is posted around this forum. I got one matched up sort of close, but a little too fat from advanced auto. I going to replace it again soon with the correct one. When you pull the sensor you will have to rotate it as you pull it out. Not a lot of clearence.

I am not even sure how I am going to get it out. It looks really tight. What kind of tools did you use? How long did it take? I imagine once you take that out all the oil is going to drip out so I should by oil in advance.

 

yes, drain the oil, I did mine along with the oil change. It's not hard at all three 10mm bolts. Pull bolts tap the sensor along the edge with hammer or piece of wood and pull it out, it will catch on the lip and you rotate it as you pull. Takes a little time to get it out after fiddling with it some. Slide it back in the same way, just pay attention to the direction where it actually clears, start it back in the same way. I went back in easier than it came out.
