Oil cooler questions

I picked up a used set of R1 oil coolers a little while back that I hope to install soon. However, I've seen a few threads here where people seem to have very tight fits with the lines which concerns me. A friend of mine also recently commented that, given that I have a big front swaybar, Koyo rad, and a U-type intercooler (which requires slightly lowering the radiator) I might have a very hard time making the OE lines fit. I can't really visualize how the lines are routed, and unfortunately am unable to remove the bumper at my current location to take a look -- I kinda have to know exactly what I'm doing BEFORE I drive 200 miles to my folk's place to work on the car there, and pray it all goes well so I can drive it 200 miles back home

I like the R1 coolers because they're OE. They're clean, simple, and made for the car, and I also like that they mate up perfectly to the OE ducts on the 93 bumper... which brings me to my next question: do aftermarket coolers (19 row) work well with the OE ducts? Do they generally fit well with or without modification?

Another thing that popped into my head would be converting the OE coolers to accept AN fittings, and just running my own lines, but I'm not sure how easy that would be if it's even possible, and my guess is it's probably not worth the effort.

The big thing fit-wise with the stock lines for the R package cars is the hard line going to the passenger oil cooler goes in front of the engine but comes forward a bit at one point then goes back.

With my front mount setup and a Koyo the lines were exactly where the radiator wanted to live. I changed that line to an AN line and have had zero problems in the many years since I installed it. If you look in the Build Threads I did a "mini build" when I did the IC that documents some of that.

If the back of the radiator is in the stock location and sitting in the stock radiator mounts I THINK. you will be OK. For that IC you are probably just dropping the front of the radiator down some I would expect.

That's a cool thread, thanks!

The posts on the cooler lines helps a lot, but there are still a number of questions rolling around in my head. I will read it a couple more times in the following days, and if I still have questions I will test your memory

Funny, today is also the first day I started doing any research into fuel rails that use AN fittings. So many adapters!

Thanks! I've had some questions on specifics of my oil cooler line setup and that was so long ago I don't remember all the details. I will say that it has exceeded my expectations - all these years later, not a single leak or problem.

What are your oil temps? Doing something for the sake of doing something is a waste

There is also this (https://www.rx7club.com/3rd-generati...-cheap-633480/). Thread is about using a OEM driver side cooler on the passenger side, but it includes info on non-stock connections with OEM coolers.

I installed a set of R1 dual oil coolers some time ago on my Touring VR. As I recall, the hardlines took a bit of wiggling to get it to fit. I am running a Fluidyne radiator and stock mount PFS intercooler. I did not have to remove the bumper to do this install just the intake, IC and the maybe the battery (I cannot recall about the battery). I used the stock lines and had to purchase a stock oil hose. Everything works great and I have never had a leak.

Thanks, that also has some helpful info!

To answer your question about why:

1. Less heat it pretty much always better, especially when it comes to our cars!
2. As somebody on here once pointed out, somebody at Mazda thought that 1 cooler was not enough for the "track model" -- I think that is enough evidence alone!
3. This car will eventually get some casual track time -- see #2.
4. I recently burned up a set of stock turbos. Not sure how much of that was heat vs. 270 degrees of lubrication, but I want to be nice to my new BNRs.
