Oil Cooler Line Couplers

Hey Guys,
I'm struggling a bit here and was hoping someone out there might have some tips. I'm reinstalling my newly rebuilt engine and am having difficulty getting the rubber line that comes from the oil filter pedestal hard pipe to couple to the oil cooler hard line. I can't seem to get enough penetration into the coupler on the hard line to be able to install the retaining clip. I've been hours on this and beyond frustrated.

Also, I purchased a Mazda full engine gasket and o-ring kit-- but there don't appear to be replacement o-rings for the oil cooler couplers. Is it standard practice to re-use 'em? Can they be trusted?

As always, grateful for this forum and the wealth of knowledge that you all are willing to share.

Cheers,
Tom
