Oil Control Rings and Porting

Okay, my other thread was pretty cluttered, and now after a little more research I can ask more of a direct quetion.

When you port a side plate, when looking through the port holes, how much, if any, should you see of the oil control rings? If none, then my plates are garbaged because on one plate, the oil ring overlaps the inner edge of the port and I can see about 1/2 to maybe 3/4 of the oil ring's surface, and the other plate, the entire outer oil ring over laps, in fact I can see that divider piece that seperates the inner and outer ring grooves. It doesn't appear that the inner ring is over lapping the edge, but it's riding it real close for sure.

Also, if it matters, my oil control ring springs were mixed up in regards to the white and blue paint marks on the springs, and I have yet to find why they are painted as far as what would happen if they were mixed up.

Did I get over ported, is the color coding on the springs that important, or is my oil leak somewhere else, because thats what I am after here is trying to diagnose an oil leak that was allowing oil to leak into the cobustion chambers thus kicking it into my exhaust.

I never port inwards, into the oil control o-ring track. That's probably your smoking problem. Those irons are junk.

The springs are most definitely color coded for a reason---if you have them backwards they will spin freely as the rotor rotates. That's another problem.

I can't speak to specifics as I've never seen the results of either mistake.

Well, even though it is taking forever to get my car going, I'm learning more along the way atleast.

I'll get me some stock plates and I'll get this show on the road because everyone I've talked with and thread I can find says they are trashed. Tired of my car just sitting there on stands.

well, there's something to be said for doing things yourself, but it's a steep learning curve. You can always ship the short block out to IRP in NJ

Hey i just came across your thread and I also am having the same problem. I ported my irons and when i am looking through the intake runners, I can see the whole outer oil control ring and about 1/32 of an inch past that outer control ring.
I was wondering if you can send me pictures of your rear iron, Intermediate iron, and front iron pictures through the intake runners.. or as many pictures you have pertaining to the overporting into the oil control ring area. It is really bugging me and i dont want to have to start my brand new rebuild and have to tear it down again thanks a lot. I appreciate it.

( i have a 2nd gen turbo motor by the way. s5 Turbo rotors and irons)
