oil change questions
Since my purchase of my FD last week and having a temporary fix and some time on my hands, I think the best thing before truly driving my car is to do an oil change.
I got the filter, but don't know what kind of oil to use. I read on this net that synthetic is bad for rotary. What is recommended for a '94? And how many quarts?
SInce I'm a noob to FD, please advise.

Read through all of the stickies and do a search with the term "synthetic". Lots of info and ultimately, make up your own mind on the question of oil. Good luck with your car.

Follow what's in the owerner's manual. you will probably get some different choices of oil...I strickly use Castrol GTX 10-30W in both my FC and FD. Use 4 qts. For the filter, I recommend the following: Fram 6607* and K&N 1008. Also use a device that attaches to your oil filter, called FilterMAG. It can be found at www.filtermag.com or from www.rx7.com It is a great product that uses magnets to attract any suspended metal particles to the sidewall of the filter.
* - since you may not know the history of oil changes for the FD use some cheap oil and the fram oil filter for approx 500 mi or so. You want to purge any old nasty oil still in the system. I purged my oil system twice like that. I used some wal-mart oil (10-30W) and the FRAM for the first 500 mi, then repeated for another 500 mi. Once that was done. I switched to the Castrol and started using the K&N oil filter.
I also change my oil every 2K vice 3K. You do what you feel is right for the car. I'm sure some ppl will have their own opinion but this worked for me. Hope it helps and congrats!

Fram filters SUCK! Just use the OEM filters, they are high quality and easily available.
Not to start up the debate again here in this thread, but there is nothing wrong with modern synthetic oils. Nothing.
Asking how much oil to put in is a pretty basic question -- you should have both an owner's manual as well as the factory service manual. I wouldn't just poor in 4 quarts automatically, you may overfill. I do a little over 3 and see where I'm at. Also, as noted in the owner's manual, the amount between L and F on the dipstick is NOT 1 quart, it's 1.7.

Vavoline VR-1 20w50 oil is what I run, but I only drive my car in late spring to early fall. Agreed with rynberg OEM filter is the way to go for that. My car took 4.1 or so qt's btw..

after searching around a whole lot after i got my fd
synthetics arent harmful at all
its actually better but just a little bit more expensive
id recommend to swap to synthetic blend oils if your engine was always changed with dino oil
then after a few break in oil changes, then go fully sythetic
i dont know what other people recommend, but im just staying on the safe side
