I don't think running rick will cause a difference in your oil. I'm not sure why it would be watery, but it sounds like something bad.

usually when your oil is very dark that means u either have way too many miles on it, or on a tubo car u are cookign it with your turbos, or the tolorances inside teh engine are startign to get out of spec and u cook teh oil that way... i hope this helps. btw i would cahnge oil every 1500 on the FD. i use castrol 10w-30

Realize that your oil is mixed with your fuel to a certain extent so it may smell like fuel and may affect the viscosity. So you're going to get more carbon deposits in your oil in comparison to piston engines.

Plus the dirty old oil stays in the coolers. Ever check your dipstick right after an oil change? It's black. That's why I flush mine.

Isn't the oil only mixed with gas for combustion? So it wouldn't go back to the oil pan right?

P'cola FD, how do you flush the system?

I work at a Toyota dealership and get free oil (ssshhh don't tell my parts manager ). I drain the oil with the old filter on, then I fill it up and run it for a couple of minutes. Lift it back up, drain, fill, run. Lift it up, drain, change the filter, and then fill up. It comes out looking like new.

Auto parts store also sell a motor flush for $2-3. You pour it in, run the motor for 5 min, NO DRIVING, drain the oil. Don't use it very often though. The detergent may eat up your seals if you use it too often.

I think using it once every 30k mi is okay.

BTW, black oil is normal as long as it's not sludge. My parents' new MB drained all black and it's only got 20k mi on it. If you are draining brown oil, you are probably changing the oil too often. A little watery probably means that it's still fresh. I wouldn't sweat it.

To see if you are running rich, pull one of the plugs. If it's sooty, then you know.

i dont use motor flush in my engine cuz i figure it cost about 3-5 bucks for the motor flush and it cost me about 3-5 bucks for oil so what i do is just change oil more often, about every 500 miles or so. i know thats over kill but its only 3-5 bucks so who gives a crap. i change my oilfilter about every 1000 miles though.

HEY DJANTLIVE.....black watery oil is NOT normal. I am a mechanic...and I see the newer shop guys change the oil on Benzes all the time. Their oil is never black uless they are DIESEL.
My 1995 NEVER has black oil. The oil is usually dark amber - dark brown. I change the oil about every 1000 miles. It cant hurt to change oil more often that most people. And Anyone who bitches about havin to buy so much oil for changing it so often....you are dumb. Your motor is VERY hight strung it your car is modded and requires extra care. Spending 20 bucks for oil and a filter every 1000 miles is not a financial burded. I would never use any form of "engine flush" on my motor. The seals might not like that at all.

Sounds weird but the color of the oil depends on how you look at it. While it's draining, it looks darker. When you look at it on a towl, it's lighter. I was referring to the color when it drains. If it's black on a towl, then you should change the oil more often.

BTW, changing the oil too often is a waste of natural resources. It generates extra waste too, even if you recycle your oil.

I think it is somewhat normal for the oil to be thinner than you are used to in a rotary.

Mine seems a bit thinner after I drain it than it looked going in. I thought it was from being exposed to gas, and the compustion process. However, I am not sure of that...in fact, I don't know if excess oil can get back from the combustion chamber into the oil pan...anyone?

I don't think the color really is an indication of anything. As long as you change the oil at least every 3K, you should be fine.

Also remember different oils are different shades.

Later,
Patrick

If it's black, watery, and reeks of gas then you have a problem. My FD does this to oil in less than 1k miles.

Sounds like a possible problem to me, I can't imagine that should be normal.

Thumbs up

I have flushed my engine with the machine that is at my Mazda Dealership. I didn't use the cheap products from Pep Boys. It cost me $100 and I never had any problems with it. I flushed it about 6 months ago and I have also had a few compression test done and there was absolutely no change in compression. I will get another engine flush in a few months, it was worth $100.
