i used to also wonder why WRC rally cars had those really tall akward looking shifters in thier cars also; untill i watched in car footage of a race. with the shifter only 2 inches from the wheel a rally driver can reach down to shift and back to fighting the steering wheel in less time than i would have thought humanly possible.
those tall shifters also have ridiculiously short throws for up-down (sequential) movement..... just a thought...
rally FD?

Banned. I got OWNED!!!
look how much closer the shift **** is to the steering wheel. the time needed to move your hand from the wheel to the shifter is decreased, hence you have more hand-time on the wheel.
only if it didnt look so goddam ugly...

JoeD and SPEED NYC know what's up, in Rally racing it's best to have both hands on the wheel but you also want to be able to shift fast... The only way to have those two things is to have the shifter setup like that. Goofy looking but I see the point.

Looks ugly as SH*T, but if it stops people from trying inbetween 3rd Gear and 5th Gear thus destroying their synchro's...maybe it's worth being ugly

is that the ikea formula shifter? it's not a true sequential, you still need to use your clutch, it just change the 'gate shifting' motion into pull/push motion.

With straight cut gears and dog rings, it would make the transmission sequential in operation, only requiring the clutch for starting out in 1st. However, at the price of the gear set, you might as well buy a Quaife sequential gear box ready-made.

You can get a custom one put in over here that does the same thing only the shifter its self is alot lower. Actually that one from Ikeya is 140,000 yen which is about $1,100...
