Well then....lets hope the jap boyz take a glancer and explain what the fok this thing is, because other than having a seq aparatus of some sort in there, I really dont see the point of it. I mean, most jap guys are small enough that they would actually either have to reach UP to the thing or sit on a small pillow to be able to comfortable use the thing.

I'm surprised there isn't a foot tall armrest to go with it :D

ZoomZoom 04-28-02 10:46 PM

Maybe he is handicapped.

SPEED_NYC 04-28-02 11:07 PM

i used to also wonder why WRC rally cars had those really tall akward looking shifters in thier cars also; untill i watched in car footage of a race. with the shifter only 2 inches from the wheel a rally driver can reach down to shift and back to fighting the steering wheel in less time than i would have thought humanly possible.

those tall shifters also have ridiculiously short throws for up-down (sequential) movement..... just a thought...

rally FD? :)

whats that?

Import Convert 04-28-02 11:22 PM

this gives me an idea! I'll put the shifter from my Dakota in my 7 and the shifter from my 7 in my Dakota......... Damn, would that ever be a blast:fruit:

JoeD 04-28-02 11:23 PM

look how much closer the shift knob is to the steering wheel. the time needed to move your hand from the wheel to the shifter is decreased, hence you have more hand-time on the wheel.

only if it didnt look so goddam ugly...

NickSimcheck 04-28-02 11:49 PM

JoeD and SPEED NYC know what's up, in Rally racing it's best to have both hands on the wheel but you also want to be able to shift fast... The only way to have those two things is to have the shifter setup like that. Goofy looking but I see the point.

They should have left the 'boot' off. Looks kinda neat w/o:

Those things are pretty expensive, and would be kinda cool to have hehe, I've seen some pics where the shifter is shorter, so they arent all like that.

That's exactly what it is. I have that pic in one of my rx-7 books and had my girlfriend read it to me. It's a sequential shifter that's worth about $1000.

Looks ugly as SH*T, but if it stops people from trying inbetween 3rd Gear and 5th Gear thus destroying their synchro's...maybe it's worth being ugly:D

Alpine 04-29-02 12:52 AM

is that the ikea formula shifter? it's not a true sequential, you still need to use your clutch, it just change the 'gate shifting' motion into pull/push motion.

jimlab 04-29-02 01:54 AM

With straight cut gears and dog rings, it would make the transmission sequential in operation, only requiring the clutch for starting out in 1st. However, at the price of the gear set, you might as well buy a Quaife sequential gear box ready-made. :)

You can get a custom one put in over here that does the same thing only the shifter its self is alot lower. Actually that one from Ikeya is 140,000 yen which is about $1,100...

Ninjak 04-29-02 02:44 AM

The new Civic SI i think has the shifter ON the console. looks really out of place, Its their "rally inspired blah blah......"

Brad 04-29-02 03:20 AM
