Odometer RollFORWARD ! Can anyone do this ?

Ok I need to replace my gauge cluster as my tach is bad and I still have the bad one still on the odometer says 114kish and I found a replacement but it reads 100k I dont want to jip anyone when I sell the car or even know that I cheated my miles so I was wondering is there a way to roll the odometer forward to read 114k instead of 100k. I dont want to drive the car everywhere just so I can get 114k on the odo I want to do it somewhat legit. Thanks for any help

I have no idea if this really works, but...

The speed sensor I believe is where the odometer gets its info from (I don't know where else it could get it). Could you remove the speed sensor from the tranny and rig an adapter to a cordless drill so you can "drive" the sensor? I would think all you need to do is have the key on and it wouldn't matter which direction the sensor is turning when you "drive" it. Just keep going until you get the mileage you want...

Worth a shot anyway.

The problem is the mileage on the title. If all of the sudden the car shows less mileage that is a sure way to make a bunch of eyebrows raise with the people in charge of such things. The mileage will have been tracked in all the state inspections too.

The right thing to do is make the mileage read correctly.

In NM there is a place on the title (or bill of sale) to enter the "actual" mileage if different from the odometer. Maybe TX has the same thing?

Good thought DamonB. I would think that would work too. But does speed sensor only count the forward direction miles and not the reverse?

I have never noticed my miles going up in reverse, but then again I do not drive in reverse for much of a distance either (or even look down at my gauge cluster while driving in reverse).

I know there is an odometer certification document and sticker applied to the door jamb of vehicles with replacement clusters/guages done at dealerships. I don't know if you have to go to a speedo shop to obtain one.

The miles will go up in reverse too. The sensor merely counts a trigger on the shaft passing by. It doesn't know nor care which direction the trigger is spinning, it just counts how often it comes by. Then the black box is programmed with tire size and rear axle ratio to translate that into a distance.

I guess a lot of peoples odometer will be off then due to all the larger aftermarket rims on the 7s.

If you are planning on driving the car at all, just drive it and eventually you'll get to 114k miles. Then your miles will match the title miles and whatever you add on to that is normal. Most cars ten years or older will be branded "not actual" miles on the title anyways so you can't get in trouble for it. If you feel bad about it and ever decide to sell the car just let the buyer know, he/she will trust you as a seller even more.

Not if the tire size is computed properly. When you go to a larger diameter wheel you switch to a lower profile tire so the circumference of the tire is the same in both cases. No matter what the odometer/speed will be off a few percentage points anyway because as the tread wears the circumference gets smaller...

Why not just swap the tachs and continue to use your orignal speedometer? Taking the housing apart is easy and as long as the gauge faces match you're home free.

I know you would like it to say the right mileage but a law was passed awhile ago stating that any car 10 years or older can not be sold stating that mileage is true...so unless you have a 95 dont worry about it because its illegal to sell your car stating that it has the right mileage reading from the odometer

hopefully that made some sense...but if it is just for personal use than yeah umm good luck rolling the odometer forward

Thanks for the ideas guys I really appreciate . As far as just driving it I do feel bad b/c I would cheat the buyer and thats not what I would want but I do have no intentions of selling it. Anyways I also thought about switching the just the tachs and I think that would be easy but last time I tryed to take apart the tach it gave me trouble maybe i was missing some screws ? But Damon that was a great idea. I am ordering my gauge so I can just switch everything. Thanks for all your great ideas guys.

Replace the speedo with the original. The speedo and tach are separate guages.

Done.

If turbojeff says that's the way to go then that's the way to go. He's probably taken apart more FD's then he cares to count.

When my speed sensor broke working the mileage also didin't go up. So DamonB is right about the speed sensor feeding the mileage.
