Odometer not working, what to do?

Due to major build my car has been off the road for longer than a year. We had the cluster panel removed. After we installed it back everything worked fine except the digital odometer. Is this part sold separately or do I have to buy a whole cluster panel?

There are plenty of threads on fixing the odometer. First, though--- just undo the negative battery cable for a bit and see if that pops it back on.

You can replace capacitors (threads on this), or send the whole unit to a speedo repair shop like DNA in Tampa -- Ray Crowe also has NEW speedos for under $400 but you would need to have a speedo shop input your original miles.

Buying a used speedo is a crapshoot. I've done it all. Best advice is 1. try the battery reset first, then if it's still an issue -- send it out to someone like DNA for repair.

Good luck!

Thanks for the reply. We have removed and installed it again, I guess that's the same as battery disconnect. Then we have sent it to a speedo repair shop but no luck. When I turn on the lights it lights up in amber colour but doesn't display the numbers Maybe the speedoshop I took it to was not good. I will try another one before I fork out $400.

A common problem with them is caused by their ground. I forgot the exact location, but it seems the odometer depends upon the grounds found on the engine harness.

Given your location, you likely have a KM speedo -- if so there are plenty of JDM used ones for sale.

excuse my language....

But:::

F*** all the repair threads

Contact Ray @ Malloy mazda... (i think goodfella made a thread to a direct # to him)
$350 for a Brand new Speedometer (everything on the gauge is controlled by the SPeedo).
1 hour of your time putting in the new speedo. Problem solved.

Otherwise you can use the step by step instructions to find on how to replace & fix the capacitors & pay some speedo company to fix it for you.....

Realize that we have a 15+year old rx7 with old components that need to be replaced

P.S. i went through 3 clusters b4 I got tired and put a new speedo in the cluster

Dont mean to slightly threadjack but I have a somewhat related question, does the engine harness need to be connected in order for the odometer to function @ key on?

Reason I'm asking is I'm currently working on my FD roller and I'm repairing the engine harness so its out the car. I have the "front"/battery harness done and grounded and everything else works. I remember reading something about a ground on the UIM but wanted to verify with someone more experienced than I. Currently it lights up, but does not display anything.

I'll check the speedo out later for bad caps while I'm doing the h2o linearization mod - jus wanted to ask while I'm on here. Have a good weekend everybody!

The instrument cluster ground lives on the engine harness and bolts near the solenoid rack/spider/etc on the rotor housing. There are two ring terminals I believe.

My Odometer did not work when I got the car, but now that I finally got the engine in and everything plugged up it works!

Thanks! Maybe tomorrow (rather later today), I'll test something out since I'm almost done with my engine harness. Soon I'll have a proper drivetrain, but I think I can make something work to test that out in the meanwhile.
