Wink Noob needs FMIC

I plan on taking my Fd down to Texas a few months from now, I would like a front mount intercooler cause I could be wrong but it would be better in the heat. Plus it looks cooler, am I right? :-p

Anyhoo. Just bought this Rx7 and want to add a downpipe so I was told to upgrade intercoolers. (mind you I'm not enhancing the engine anymore than this) I have a catback already aswell, and I'll go intake too.. but just these things.

I dont need anything crazy, just something that will fit, and work for my stock setup. Open to all opinions, thanks guys.

so you want an FMIC because it looks cool and is better for the heat? First think about the air youll be blocking to the radiator that can cause a potential over heating problem. Second you need to look into intercooler effiency and pressure drop etc...If that is all your doing to your car a FMIC is pointless..IMO. Get a bigger stock mount with proper ducting. No need to do something to a car performance wise because it looks "cool"

If you're moving to a HOTTER climate, a FMIC would be a terrible option. It blocks the cool air flow to the radiator. Just go with an upgraded SMIC. Especially if you don't plan to modify the car any further.

prices on SMIC used can range anywhere from 600-1200 for small stock mounts to larger stock mounts. If i were you, you could just get a greddy smic or ARC smic for arounf 600-700 bucks and have decent cooling for the AIT's. A larger stock mount like the M2/ASP large or the pettit coolchargre III can go from 1000-1500 used to new. Alot of single turbo guys use those and alot of track peeps on this forum..

Search through the For sale section. There are some SMIC's for sale right now. I personally run a ASP/M2 Medium IC. I love it. However, they normally cost about twice as much as other IC's. There's plenty of info on the subject.

In my opinion I would replace the following (just common practice for myself and freinds cars that listen to me and my upgrade list...):

1. Stock radiator -- Replace with a Koyo or / insert-after market name here... Fludyne is another common one I believe.

2. Replace the Plastic AST with a Metal one. (Petit, Gotham Racing, RX7store.net various places sell them..) (One thing to note here: I was provided with a 16lbs cap, which I used for about 10k miles. Then after bursting two throttle body hoses, I decided to go back to a 13lbs cap. I know there was some sort of recall for this problem of bursting hoses but I had everything fresh from a rebuild and decided to try it for it being summer reasons...) I recommend staying at a 13lbs cap.

3. If you have an after market ECU set your fans to turn on at lower temps. (I think mine are at 90c, 95c and 100c for the levels...

4. Then think about your intercooler. If you go FMIC you will be blocking air as everyone has said. Its a huge debate on the forums here. I am on this fence of: Anything to keep these cars cooler the better, I would much prefer to have my Radiator have the fresh air, then second hand air after it passes through the IC. Engine cooling first, Air intake temps second.

As said above a properly ducted SMIC (Stock mount intercooler... Such as ASP/M2) will be just fine for an upgrade to the stock setup.

These are just my opinions obviously. I can't push this enough: Radiator upgrade first, to hell with the intercooler if your engine is cooked! If you plan on tracking the car in that heat I would either add a second oil cooler or upgrade the existing one before the IC.

Those fan temp settings are pracically at the stock temps. I'm currently running 90, 90, 95. Some run even lower than that.

As for the oil cooler, I do agree that it's an important upgrade, but not nearly as important as the IC upgrade.

if you dont have a aftermarker EMS you could always run a FC thermoswitch. I believe they turn the fans on 5 degrees C sooner than stock. I have mine set for them to come on at 85* C. for both fans..never over heated in my life *knock on wood*

*sigh* well if your doing a swap anyways dont buy anything. It would be a complete waste of money. Not that it isnt any of my business but how much did you get that car for. You could have just bought a solid roller with a drive train and save your *** thousands of dollars.

Rear wheel drive makes a car infinitely better, right?

You sound like you're full of yourself.
