Hi, I plan on keeping the rx7 automatic (i know, i know
) but i'm going to add the 4.33 gear in there when i save enough money. What i want to know is this a bad idea? The auto already lags as it is and i heard going non-sequential will make it worse ... with the 4.33 will it be a problem? Thanks- Clayton.

I see you are stuck in the exact same situation as I am. I was also ordering my 4.33 ring and pinion next week. But the big question im asking myself is, should I go Non-seq to try to get over 15pds of boost or should I stay with a quicker (i dont know how much quicker) spooling turbos but with different handling and probly a longer spool to get your desired boost.

Awesome, nice to know there's another person on this forum trying to squeeze some power out of the Auto. Please let me know how you like it; if you haven't read the report on http://www.scuderiaciriani.com/rx7/differential.html about the auto owner there's the link. This is prolly what convinced me this is the way to go

Don't do it. You'll lose about 1.5-2 seconds in the 0-60. I've driven a car that had it done. Even at 12psi with full exhaust and intake, it comes on way too slow. Not to mention that an auto with an open exhaust (as is necessary for nonsequentials to attempt to spool below 4k) sounds like dogshit.

I'm not being an *** I'm really curious. In my small single minded world I can't see myself drving an automatic anything ever especially an FD.
I drive in a area with congested, stop and go, traffic. Also, i want my wife to be able to drive it if she needs too and she's not too good with stick.
So even with the 4.33 gear a non-sequential will be extremely laggy?

I have had a lot of initial "Oh my God....it's an AUTOMATIC!" when someone first sees my car, but that lasts until they take a ride in it....lol!
Like you, I used to just LOATHE automatic trannies....considered them suitable only for women or someone who couldn't drive. I've had many, many sports cars and sports sedans in my 45 years, and ALL of them were 4 or 5 speed cars. So you can imagine that the idea of a sports car, especially an FD, with an auto bordered on sacrilege! But when I went to purchase a 3rd gen, I was dismayed by the abysmal condition of nearly every one of the 5 speed cars I drove. So when I was told of this pristine automatic car, I thought..."Okay, I'll at least go have a look." The car looked great but...there was that damned automatic in there! I had to be coaxed into it by the salesman, and it was with disdain and near contempt that I started the car and put it into gear and drove off.
And you know what? It wasn't that bad, I'm thinking to myself. And when I got it out on the highway and opened it up and let her scream a bit, I was like, "THIS is an automatic powered car???" It didn't seem much, if any, different than the 6 other 5 speed cars I had driven, in fact from 80 - 120 it seemed faster, to my "butt dyno".
Now I did find it odd not having to shift...my hand kept going to the shifter of its own volition. And you know what? I sort of found myself actuall LIKING not having to shift.
To make a long story short, I bought the car. And as I drove it more and more, especially in heavy stop and go traffic, starting from inclines, etc. I liked it more and more.
Certainly there is NO mistaking the pitiful launch from a dead stop....I won't disagree with that at all. THAT is where the real difference lies, no doubt about it. Compared to a 4K rev and clutch dump, tire smoking screaming 5 speed launch...yeah, it falls short. Replaced by a "Uh...what? You want to go? Now? Oh...okay" creep, but then....
Then after a short roll everything hooks up and you can still get that incredible tire-smoldering, tail-end squirming kick in the *** that is SO much fun!
I can live with that.
My first Fd was an Auto and I must admitt I miss it when I find my self in traffic in Tamp, Orlando, and even Jacksonville. I used the hold button all the time and like you said from a roll it lacked nothing. If you remove the ABS fuse you could liven up the launch a bit but if it had a higher stall converter it would be hard to beat.

. I'm just getting ready to put in 4.33 gears and and a torque converter with a slightly higher stall speed. Since I don't drag race the car it should give the FD a little "extra" in the power band for freeway flyin' and canyon carving.
