Noisy tranny, what should I do?

Hey all,
I'm getting bearing noise in my tranny in 2nd and 4th gear, mostly in 2nd. It sounds almost like air rushing out of a vent. Anyone have any ideas what is causing this? I thought maybe it was the main bearing but its kind of weird that I only get it in those 2 gears if its the main bearing. All other bearings are gear specific so I shouldn't get it in 4th. Maybe its worn gears? Any ideas? I don't have any shifting problems, its just the noise. I also get a little noise in neutral but its pretty miniscule. Should I get it rebuilt or would it be ok to just ignore it? What are the consequences? Anyone know of a good place to get it rebuilt? What about a new transmission or Mazda rebuilt transmission, is there a such thing as a Mazda reman tranny? TIA.

Have you ever changed your tranny fluid? Now is the time to do so, SWITCH TO SYNTHETIC. I gaurantee it will lessen your problems. This is not a cure all but will help. Did with me.

Yeah I've been running Neo Synthetic for about 2 years now, i've just had it changed actually, about 3 months ago when i noticed the noise. I checked the drain plug for metal shavings and there wasn't much on there but before that it had only been maybe 3-4k miles, so I've drained and filled twice with Neo in the last 6k miles. I did notice shifting was smoother the first time I used Neo, good stuff, but I've never had a problem with shifting, its always been pretty smooth in all gears, its just the noise. Anyone know what a new tranny goes for? What about through Mazdacomp? Or am I better off just getting mine rebuilt?

Peter Farrel told me that my synthetic tranny oil (RedLine MT) was the cause of my main bearing taking a walk at 68K. Got louder and louder. I don't know if it's true or not but he's the expert so I'm running reg gear oil in my 94 tranny.

The rebuild would have nailed me for about $2K so I got PFS/ J.Duff to source me a good tranny (94 with 20K). I still have the original and plan to send it off to Pineapple for a rebuild with the shorter M2 5th gear.

Did he tell you why that happened? I can see why they say no syn. in the engine but a tranny. They basically have the same characteristics of normal car tranny's. Unless there is proof, it's kinda hard to believe that it caused that.

Redline MTL is very thin, I talked to the mechanic about my noise and he said he recommends MTL if you have synchro problems but that its thiness would make my particular problem worse. Obviously thinner oil is harder on bearings. His opinion was that all synthetics were the same, except for MTL is significantly thinner. I've never tried it personally, but he poured some of it into a cap to show me, and yeah, that stuff is thin. FWIW I had bearing noise ever since I got the car and didn't realize it, and its just been getting worse and worse, but very very slowly. Even now most people don't even know what I'm talking about because its such a subtle noise, but I have pretty sensitive ears.
