noise, sounds like throwout bearing but.....

ok i got a wierd one. when i got my car it always made a slight noise when i was idling without the clutch down, would go away when the clutch was pushed in. so i thought no biggy, its a bad throwout bearing, i'm changing the clutch anyways.

fast forward to this spring, i swapped the clutch (with new throwout / pilot bearing) AND the transmission..... but i still have the noise! what the heck else could it be? its gotten a LIL bit louder over time now, but still sounds like a throwout bearing, and still goes away when i push the clutch in.

It's not the throw out bearing.

I agree. Unfortunately many trannys have a worn input shaft bearing, so it's entirely possible that both the new and old tranny would make a similar bearing noise.

Money on Imput shaft bearing and there's also another bearing that connects the imput shaft to manshaft that wears out too. Sorry bro and when its opened up lots of your 3 piece brass syncro's are going to be worn too. Parts arent cheep for this trans and its a PITA to build so expect to drop a good chunk of change.

hmm now i'm curious..... i have a mazdatrix in there now, i wonder if it'd sound any different with the stocker back in. maybe i'll try that just for the hell of it

oh, and is there anything BAD that can happen by driving around like this? obviously eventually i want to fix it, but i don't have the time/money to right now...as it is i only even drive the car maybe once a week? is it more of an annoyance than anything?

For the record my has done that since I bought it, and my friends Jeep does it as well, all the other manual cars I can think of are either to loud to hear something like that, or I just never really paid attention. Nothing to the extent that anybody else would notice without seriously paying attention though, especially if your in the car.

im having the same problem. mine is pretty loud though. i originally thought it was the throwout bearing too. went to replace it and was brand new. Ive been driving it with the noise for about 8 months now with no problems. i got a new tranny but i havent changed it because im in japan.
