Very sorry to hear about your loss. Glad everyone was okay! It's pretty horrible to hear these types of stories. It's nice to see that you still have a positive attitude though.

Gas/oil floats on water and doesn't mix so the thought is that throwing water on a gas/oil fire would spread things around with popping and steam explosions and make the situation worse and maybe get you covered with flaming stuff.

It's a judgement call, but rather than stand there and watch my car burn, I put an engine fire out early one morning with 1 drinking glass of water and a bunch of snow--which saved the car. I had started the car to warm up and then went back inside to brush my teeth, came back out and there was smoke with embers falling out the bottom of the engine bay.

A fire needs 3 things, if you take away any 1 of them it'll go out.
