no compression on any rotors and the ATF trick - advice....

Hey guys -

I have put an engine which sat for about 4 months into a new FD. When trying to start, it spins over pretty freely, and shows basically no compression anywhere.

We've come to the conclusion the seals must be stuck. We injected ATF into the lower spark plug holes, let it sit overnight, and tried turning her over 24 hrs later. At best, maybe a slight increase in the puff noises coming out of the exhaust. When pulling all the plugs out, you can hear all the puffs coming out, but it still turns over without any real compression.

We've gone ahead and injected a bit more ATF and MMO into the lower holes again, spun it backwards by hand, and are going to let it sit overnight and see what happens.

Do you guys have any other ideas about this? Is it possible it could take several days for things to get unstuck? The Tech at mazdatrix said after 2 or 3 days, if nothing happens, then, well...RIP.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

TIA -

friend of mine dumped about 2 quarts into his motor when an injector stuck and flooded the thing with gas loosing compression. every half hour or hour he would try cranking it and about 3 hours later it finally started. can you say big cloud of smoke?

How many miles were on the engine? Are you sure it had compression 4 months ago? Just wondering if you picked it up used and do not actually know if it was ever a good engine.

If you want to introduce large ammounts of ATF to the engine, it is easier to pour it down the lower intake runners, it is not nearly as messy as trying to squirt it into the spark plug holes.

Friend of mine just got his unstuck. Took a couple of weeks of letting her sit with ATF in the engine, but that's just because he got busy with other things. Now he's running premix until he can fix the injector problem just so the apex seals stay lubed.

thanks for the advice. Yeah, it's has less than 10K miles on it. My other car was smashed in a wreck, but the engine was good. So I'm swapping it into the new car -

Several people have recommended working the seal back and forth with the eraser tip of a pencil, so I'm gonna give that a shot next/

Here do this, I did I for my 20b and my 13b that's currently in my Fd now with 98k original miles. Trust me it works if the seals aren't blown. Also check the link within my post.

cool, thanks. I've got the engine back out, and the turbos off now, so it should be no problem.

Also while your in there use small pieces of scotch pads and cleaner to scrub the rotor faces clean. I used a long thin straight screw driver (bent to a slight angle)to grab the pad in the housing and scrub the faces. I works well.

Good tip - still working on it. These seals are stuck tight...

Acetone works like a **** too. I use it to break down the carbon in the seal grooves when I'm cleaning the rotors for a rebuild.
