Solenoids can be found in electro/mechanical relays and valves. The basic function of a solenoid is that by using a magnetic field you can pull or draw the contacts of a relay closed or pull the spool of a valve open or close.
A solenoid is basically a long wire wrapped around a core. When voltage is applied to this wire it creates a magnetic field.
The term solenoids on an FD is referring to the "solenoid valves".

The solenoids people talk about the most on this forum are the solenoids that control the twin turbo system. There is a rack underneath the intake manifold that holds most of the solenoids that run the turbo control sytem. The solenoids are connected by a plethora of vacuum hoses that get old, get brittle, and cause problems. Many times, a bad or broken solenoid results in low boost, that is why you hear so much about them.
