Solenoids can be found in electro/mechanical relays and valves. The basic function of a solenoid is that by using a magnetic field you can pull or draw the contacts of a relay closed or pull the spool of a valve open or close.
A solenoid is basically a long wire wrapped around a core. When voltage is applied to this wire it creates a magnetic field. The term solenoids on an FD is referring to the "solenoid valves". |
So a speaker is like a solenoid, right?

This might also help to illustrate how a Solenoid functions.

The solenoids people talk about the most on this forum are the solenoids that control the twin turbo system. There is a rack underneath the intake manifold that holds most of the solenoids that run the turbo control sytem. The solenoids are connected by a plethora of vacuum hoses that get old, get brittle, and cause problems. Many times, a bad or broken solenoid results in low boost, that is why you hear so much about them.

What's the procedfure to test one of our solenoids?
Thanks |
