About the idle problem. I might have a solution for you. It could be the dashpot UIM. This is a sort of damper near the UIM (Upper Intake Manifold). Here is a post I did on this:

https://www.rx7club.com/forum/showth...hreadid=180123

Sorry about the pictures being such a poor resolution. I took them with a 4 megapixel camera and had to REALLY mess them up in order to get them small enough, in size, to post on the forum. If you want higher resolution pictures just send me a PM and I will work something out.

It's a great deal - buy it.
As far as the idle problem - try some searchs on this forum. If it's happened, it's on this forum. Or take it to one of the reputable tuners. As far as going to Mazda - they didn't know how to work on these cars when they came out and they still don't! Since Mazda didn't fix the problem have the owner take it back. They'll poke around and guess some more!
I'm lucky I have a Mazda mech that owns a R1 and I live 20 mins from Pettit at 12.5 boost!
Pettit is in West Palm Beach FL area. That's not too far. If money is a problem find another less known tuner closer and cheaper.
Good luck.

could be a problem with the gasket on the lower intake manifold as well...

i think my 7 is exhibited signs of this exact same problem...

i was out at kdr a year or so ago and dave (to diagnose the problem) took some carb cleaner and sprayed it around the LIM and the car stumbled.. meaning some of that cleaner was getting sucked in...

dave said just to keep an eye on it, but that eventually the gasket should be replaced...

from the kdr price list:

Lower intake gasket replacement:
Parts and Labor: 620.00

I had an idle fluctuating problem a few weeks ago and it was a loose vacuum line, so don't count that idea out.

i could fix the car in 10mins flat, i have extra ISC's if that's the prob

i'd say worse case scenario, it's got a leaky LIM gasket, which is hard to replace, but only $30 or so

a weekend project

The idle problem is most definitely a vacuum leak somewhere, most likely the lower intake manifold gasket. My FD had the exact same problem when I bought it. It's a major pain to replace because you have to remove the turbos and most of the top end of the engine. It will cost you much more than $30 for all the gaskets... more likely in the lower to mid $100 range if you do it yourself and don't break anything.

Damn guys.. these are good. Keep them coming. I definately wouldn't try to do this by myself. I don't have the tools nor the know how. I wouldn't mind bringing it somewhere though.. to someone close around here that had the same problem maybe.. then we could talk and look at things then go from there. It would be a daily driver for now so I wanna get it fixed ASAP.

I would be willing to drive to Houston when I get it... to talk with someone who has one and maybe could look at it and fix it right. Anyone on here qualified for that job?

Where are you at in Louisiana? Right now I'm in Maryland, but I'm moving back to Mississippi (Hattiesburg) this weekend. It's about 2 hours or less from New Orleans.

Well I found out today that it was the ISC solenoid that got changed out. So now we're back to the vacuum leak thing. Have ya'll ever heard of spraying Nitrogen on the outside of the motor while it's running to see if it gets sucked in somewhere to find a leak? That's what he mentioned to me today. I've never heard of it but what do ya'll think>?

These cars seem to constantly have some issue or another. As discussed above, read about the reliability and expense of ownership.
At the price he's asking I would probably not be too concerned with the idle problem. Take it to someone locally who know FD's. I'm sure it you post for help in the local forum someone will help you out.

Good luck.

There are several ways to adjust the idle. My car was idling high and surging as you described, but I was able to mess w/ the idle adjustment and get it straight. I've used carb cleaner to find vacuum leaks, but never nitrogen. Use the search function on this site and check out www.scuderiaciriani.com/rx7 for a lot of great info...including what to check for when test driving a 7. That price is a steal, even if it needs engine work. You mentioned that you are not mechanically inclined...If you buy an rx7 you will be forced to become so, unless you have a cash pipeline to afford having a shop do everything . Well worth it, though.

Spraying nitrogen is not going to do **** (70% of air is nitrogen, or something like that). You need to spray something flammable, like brake cleaner, carb cleaner, or propane. You spray around the gasket area and listen for a change in the idle, which will indicate a leak. Since this stuff is flammable, make sure to have a fire extinguisher ready!

Lake Charles, huh? When I sold my motorcycle on Ebay, some guy from Lake Charles bought it and drove out here. He told me that he was the owner of a bar, I think he said it was called Construction Zone?? Something like that...
