Question Newbie - think I have a turbo seal problem

Just bought a 93 touring - it blows LOTS of white smoke if you let it run above 4000 at high vacuum - like crusing on the FWY. If you go to 5th - drop the revs to 3000 - then the smoke stops - I suspect the compressor seal is gone on the primary turbo - car is completely stock - 102K on the turbos - 32 K on the engine rebuild. So - what do I do? Options appear to range from $300 for a couple of turbo city rebuild kits to $2600 for a new set of 99 twins. I want to keep the low end power for autocrossing and street driving - this will not be a 1/4 mile car. So - do the rebuild kits last? I had one shop tell me that he will only install 99 twins - the rebuilds last 9 months and then they are back in his shop. Right now - I plan to rebuild myself ( I bought a set of stock twin off ebay and can rebuild them before I disable the car - the manifolds look OK - only one small crack in the bridge across the wastegate - hope I can fix it with my TIG welder) - and based on what I've read - I'll have a local turbo shop rebalance them after rebuild. I got a downpipe and midpipe with the car that I would plan to install too - I'd like to end up with 350 HP car when I'm done - so maybe an intercooler and an air intake are in the future - and maybe ECU mods to keep from toasting the motor. No smog checks here - so bye-bye cats. Oh yeah - the stock muffler is still there too - so I'm replacing it with a racing beat dual tip when I do the turbos - can't look like a rice boy with a 4 inch tip, you know. All advice appreciated. Well as for the Rebuilt kits, i wouldent belive that guy, My father's and my Rx7's both have rebuilt turbos Both running Strong, 230k and 102k.....

and your not going to hit 350 hp with just turbo mods....you will need items suchs as: Intercooler, Intake, ECU, fuel pump, injectors and so on.. try looking here at Rx7store.net 400 Power upgrade kit , your going need most of that to meet your goal ..

On a side note, DO not put the midpipe on with out some kind of boost controler, you WILL experence boost creep and that can kill your engine.

And i would do anything beyond Intake and Exhaust with out a ECU, otherwize you will run lean, another way to kill you engine.

Good luck

Hey MrRx - thanks for the advice - how is it down there in Tejas? I went to UT - and get back to Austin about 3 times a year. In fact my car got its engine rebuild at Alamo Rotary - and it was Tito who told me the rebuild kits would not last - maybe he was just trying to sell me a $2600 set of 99 turbos? (He owned my car after the first owner lost the engine at 65K miles and sold it to him) Glad to hear that the rebuilds work - that means I'll have more cash left to spend on an intake and other goodies. I was hoping to make 350Hp with an intake, DP, mid pipe, cat back, intercooler and whatever ECU mods I need to keep the engine alive - sounds like I might need more work on the fuel system too. Any recommendations on ECU mods vs the piggyback control systems - like the FC commander - or whatever its called? Thanks for the info. Jim

I only got about a year on my rebuilt turbos. They always boosted fine but began to smoke, but only at an
idle. They shot a lot of oil in my intake.

Its true you can hit 350hp on the stock injectors but runing at 100% duty.

Its hot as hell down here in texas!

Power Fc seems to be the most widely used...

your other options would be, Mircotech, Haltech, Greddy Emanage, wolf, and so on.

When i happen to run into $1200 im going to be puting in the PowerFC.

becuase my car is untuned i only get around 230hp to the wheels.
