Newbie Question about RX7 Doors

I just picked up a 95 FD R2 this weekend.
I noticed that both the passenger and drivers door takes a lot of force to close. I have to slam them pretty hard to get them to close. Is this normal on FDs? Is there an adjustment that can fix this?

Open the window or sunroof a small crack........and it will make them 10 times lighter to close. No pressure.

Yeah the car is very airtight with small internal space so the air can't escape quick enough when ya clost the doors. Just open a window and see if that helps.

You should not ever have to slam the door. Not by any means. Maybe close it with more force than a new bmw or something, but not slam. If you do need to slam it to get it closed, there is other issues. Accident maybe?

BTW IIRC 92-93's were R1's and 94-95's were R2. Thats just for the R models.

It's a little hard for me to close the door from the inside without pulling on it harder than I like. Especially with the door plastics as they are. I've gotten in the habit of opening the window just a bit. If that doesn't make a difference, take it to a trusted collision shop and have it looked at.

I think some of you guys who are thinking the car was wrecked don't know what car he bought:

https://www.rx7club.com/3rd-generation-specific-1993-2002-16/need-advice-95r2-603164/

charleysung,

It normal with the car. It has to do with as others have said, the air escaping as the door closes. On the models with sunroofs, the roof pops up slightly to let the escape when the doors close. Without the sunroof, there is just no where for the air to go quick enough. Add in the fact that the FD doors are light and it can make it more difficult than most newer cars to close the door all the way.

I never had any problems with my '94; closed like a normal door to me.

Anyway, congrats on the purchase; be sure to post pics and hopefully you can make it out to a few meets in the spring if we have any.

I don't recall anyone suggesting it was wrecked. If the doors really did need adjusting, I suggested taking it to a collision shop.

you can probably adjust the striker plate that the latch grabs on the door frame. but adjust it too much and the door won't seal as well.

Crack the window and try and close it. If it is no better you may have an issue. They are a bit harder to close than your typical 4 door box.

yeah, that's one of the big differences i've noticed when 94's came out... 94-95 doors do take a bit more force to close. my 94 goes "thud" as well.. =P

feels more solid and secure..

Mine is the same, not eccessive but it does take a little more "pull" to get them shut compared to say my wife's GTP. Just don't jerk on them and make a nice smooth pull, don't grab it and jerk it shut or you end up breaking ****, then someone buys you car with broken doors and has to fix them....like I did with mine.

And if it only closes half way, NEVER jerk on it to close it the rest of the way, open the door, swing it a little harder. It is damn near a 100% guarantee something will crack or break if you do so....especially the passenger handle.

I warn passengers when they get in to be careful. I even made my buddy take his watch off because I didn't want him scratching my center console all to hell. Yeah, it might be a little over the top, but my car will look like it does now years from now, and if all I have to do is be a little **** about things, then so be it.

yeah whats the deal. my 93 doors sound and feel like a POS tin can!!! my 94 is solid as hell. whats the deal? did they reinforce the doors or build them out of better materials in 94? my 93 is torn apart at teh moment... maybe now would be a good time to swap my doors out. does anyone have any info on build differnces between 93 and 94 (not just the doors)?? what did they do differently in 93, cause whatever it is the car is just does not feel the same at all as my 94. -heath

Somebody posted a year or so ago about how he fixed the problematic FD door. He said he got inside the door, and found that the support's welds had broken free of the skin. Thus when the door gets shut is sounds like a ratteling pos. The fix, jbweld the bar back on. Apparently its supposed to make the doors sound new again. All of this is off the top of my head, but its something to look into if you have rattleing doors.
