Given drivers of similar capabilities, the new Cobra will hand any stock RX-7 up to 98 its *** in any measurable straight-line acceleration test. The 99+ RX-7 might give it a close run, but it's not faster.

The same reason I'm on a Ferarri forum, I guess. But an 03 Cobra will eat an FD's ***, I must say. There's no contest, stock for stock.
And beating a dead horse: You could put a Ferarri Enzo up against my '83 Volvo, and if it's all up to driver skill then there's a chance that I would win.

A 3,800 lbs (with driver) coupe making 480 rwhp should put the cobra in low to mid 11's.
An FD would only need 350-380 rwhp to keep up or beat that. With a better final ratio and hp/weight ratio it doesn't really matter.
So a good bolt on FD could keep right up with a bolt on Cobra.

Let's not even go into aerodynamics. Well, GM & Ford finally beat the FD. It took GM about 8 years with the Z06 and ford finally did it within 10 years. I suppose, being that it took them THAT Long to come up with something good, we should give them SOME credit

How did a 93 R1 do against a 93 cobra, a 93 C4 (Or should we compare the ZR1?), a 93 Trans Am, a 93 Z28. They didn't do very well (Except the $40k more ZR1)
Now lets say a 03 or 04 FE comes over with a 350hp 2600lb body. THAT will be interesting

I said 'far and few between'..you kind of proved my point Flybye, as I would say bolt-on FDs running mid-11s are indeed just that. These things are going to be trapping near 120 mph with bolt-ons...how many FDS will be doing that? Granted, they are quite a bit more piggish that Supras (like 3800 lbs), but still, it's hard to argue with that much HP.

Thats one reason why I wont want to drive an 03 Cobra anytime soon. Give me an open highway and a fast car, and im taking it to 150+ to see how it is at that speed.
Take an 03 Cobra to 150+, and there is a good chance you will catch air. Thats why the top speed is limited so low, relative to its power and gearing. Its because of the **** for aerodynamics. Ford knows that if that car is taken above 150 mph that it all of a sudden becomes a death wish.
I'd like to take my car to 160 and back, and live to tell about it, thank you.

Speaking of Cobras and 850 Turbos, I've been 150 in an 850 Turbo. So, not quite 160, but I've been to 150 and back and lived to tell the tale.
And it's really funny that they had to tape up the Cobra, although I've never heard that before, heh.

And we weren't stepping back ten years - we were comparing the 9 year old FD3S to the brand new '03 Cobra. Whether or not a '93 Cobra could beat a '93 RX-7 is completely irrelevant.
And you guys can't get shitty with me, because I own an RX-7. So there. Heh.

A stock 03 Cobra is rated at 385 flywheel and 3660 lbs and that does equal about a 12.8 in the 1/4 which is what they run. I don't know where you got 480 from.

Those cars do NOT pull in 6th gear, you have to top it out in 5th. The guy I know that did 530rwhp had his up to 160mph and it could have done 170 max. This car is not made for high speed racing though.

Unless the Cobra guys are full of crap, the 390 hp is underrated. Apparently they are dynoing stock at 360-380 rwhp and respond as well to bolt-ons as an FD or Supra, with 440-480 rwhp coming pretty cheaply (pulley, intake, exhaust, chip). I'm not saying I want one (I'll still take an FD anyday), but the dragracer or highway roll-on racer types out there will probably appreciate them.
