new street port, need ECU asap?

mk, motor is almost finished, 3mm and a mild street port. car already has intake/dp/catback. stock IC and cat. cleaned stock injectors, stock pump, new filter.

do i need an ECU now for normal boost? can i drive it at ~7psi (seq) normally or would i have to nurse it everwhere?

Can you more specifically define mild street port? Ie, have both the intake and exhaust ports been altered, and by how much?

I know of an FD running dp, cb, and ported exhaust on a stock ecu and ~8psi. Has been for awhile, but he also has the stock intake. That said, I really think you need an ecu upgrade. Better safe than sorry, and I'm sure you want that new motor to last as long as possible.

I have the 99 turbos, mild street port (don't know the specs), full exhaust, & intake off the stock ecu @ 10 psi. There are no problems right now. There was a little breakup in the upper rpm's, but a hks twin power fixed that.
I don't plan on doing this for long, as I have a greddy smic, 1300cc inj, fuel pump,& a pfc waiting to go in as soon as I can scrounge up the $$ to get dynotuned.

You should be good, but each car seems a bit different.

I guess one man's mild street port is another man's full race monster...who knows what it really means. For what its worth, I've been running a Pettit mild streetport (I've heard porting snobs say its barely ported at all, which is just fine by me :-) with catback, dp and intake at slightly lower-than-stock boost and I haven't had any problems. I KNOW its not the best plan in the world, but dammit my Pettit ECU fried on me.

It may be ticking but so far no hint of a boom. Maybe my motors a dud :-)

your timing is off if you have a street ported motor and stock timing...

you'll likely blow something up if you hit boost.....there is a negative split in the factory timing map and also on the base powerFC map...it will have you swapping that new engine out in no time get a PowerFC, get it tuned

Well, I hit boost regularly. I can't help myself.

Its probably the wrong place to ask this, but...why is there a negative split in the stock timing map??? That seems odd.

You know, maybe my "mild street port" isn't a "real" street port at all...what aspect of a ported motor spefically has a problem with the timing map? Maybe that part wasn't done. The reason I say this is, when I got my rebuild at Pettit, they knew I was running the stock ECU, and they added the dp and intake at the time of the rebuild. They've been around the block a few times, so I don't think they thought there was anything problematic or risky about my setup. However, for particleeffect, you probably shouldn't use anything I've said as an indicator of risk for YOUR setup, unless Pettit did the porting and told you it was OK on a stock ECU.
