new rx-7 owner - question about parts

Hello everyone.

I just picked up a completely stock 93 RX-7 with only 48k miles on it. Extremely happy with it so far, but obviously there are a few issues, else why would I be here?

Anyway, I'm just looking for a good resource to find small interior trim pieces. I know most of everything is discontinued by Mazda, and I didn't see a place on this forum to post WTB threads. I've tried Mazdatrix, and a handful of other mazda dealership online parts stores. But I'm not finding what I'm looking for.

Specifically, the LHD drivers side door pieces. More specifically, the lid to the storage compartment. The first thing that happened when I got the car home, my GF tried to clean it, and it turned it white wherever she rubbed. /sigh.

Anyway. Sorry if this is the wrong place, or a stupid question. I know finding parts for these is going to be a challenge.

try parts.com I have found some bits and pieces there. There are some small companies that make the storage compartment lids now. www.draklore.com and www.bubbletech.com

There is a parts wanted section and people post wanted threads in the 3rd gen section of the classifieds. Some things aren't that hard to find, its just are you willing to pay for them

Haha, that's usually the case. In regards to the parts wanted section, I think I don't have access to it. I saw something where I needed 5 posts and 5 replies before I was allowed to post in classifieds. All I see is the vendor section currently.

i work in the catalog department of a big wholesaler, and the FD is too old, we now only go back to 1999. or to put it another way, and online listing for anything is going to be hard to come by because the car is too old.

the storage box is NLA, FD01-68-4M0C-00, even if it wasn't, list price is $262.75

Can't believe no one has mentioned Ray Crowe yet!
Ray Crowe <crowe.ray@aol.com>

Ray used to work at Malloy Mazda and is now out on his own selling oem Mazda parts in general and RX7 parts in particular at hugely discounted rates. He has 2 FDs and knows this car like the back of his hand.

Aftermarket, custom, or used parts are the only options right now for odd interior parts. A few shops can hook you up with a custom or used map lid.

Here's what's still available new from a typical online retailer (not plugging them, just sharing information that I've collected). Every one of these parts below that has a price is still available as of a couple of weeks ago. Some like the ash tray weren't available last year.If you're really in love with the car, you may want to pick up a set of new interior trim panels like the cluster cover (hood meter), shifter panel, and stereo panel. if yours are scuffed or just to have before they stop making them. If they ever stop making them, you can sell them for more in 5 years, plus you have the backup set.

Melamine Wear Items
Shifter Panel $ 88.63 FD01-64-471D-00
Stereo Panel $ 215.47 FD01-55-21X
Cluster Cover $ 344.05 FD01-55-420E-00
Ash Tray $ 72.74 FD01-64-330C-00

Shifter Parts
Shift **** $ 134.00 R503-17-520B-00
Shift Boot $ 101.61 FD01-64-330C-00

Exterior Misc.
Battery Top Cover $ 40.11 N3A1-18-593B
R1/R2 Front Spoiler $ 122.12 FD03519H0

Driver Door Parts
Door Handle Cup Trim (Left) $ 61.51 FD01-68-DDYE-00
Lid left Disc. FD01684M0C00
Switch panel, left Disc. FD01684LYB00

Passenger Door Parts
Door Handle Cup Trim (Right) $ 61.51 FD01-68-DDXE-00
Grip, Front Assist $ 335.84 FD016944XE00

For getting a new map pocket lid I would recommend the Bubbletech lid hands down. Benny handed me one at DGRR when he first started making them and dared me to break it - it is VERY strong and damn near unbreakable. It also fits perfectly and looks perfect.

That's definitely the way to go.

Thanks for all of this info! Definitely going to pick some of these up.

Do you or anyone else know if the r1 front lip/spoiler fits the 99spec bumper?

The 99 spec bumper has its own lip spoiler, it's similar to the old R1 spoiler. The 93-95 lip spoiler won't fit right.

Usual problem is breakage I believe. If it's still functional, there's probably threads on here about restoring/repainting the early car interior plastics?

If it turned white it may have been repainted in the past and that's primer or something. The plastic is black all the way through, there's no white to reveal by rubbing.

Cleaning the 93 plastics with isopropyl alcohol will cut the original sealant which produces a cloudy white appearance.

I have had good experiences with Amayama.com from Japan. Enter the part number, if it says available, they can usually get it for you. I have had good luck getting a couple USDM FD parts from them even when a lot of places say they are not available. They were even able to get BRAND NEW FD control arms and many mazdaspeed suspension bushings for me! Imagine that.

So, where is Ray these days? I live in NoVA and used to buy all my parts from Ray until Malloy got out of the Mazda business.

I definitely consider the R1/R2 front spoiler to be a wear item. I bought my '94 R2 with a brand-new replacement installed, and then almost immediately rashed it on the wheelstop in a parking space. I now have one in storage as a backup, should I ever sell this car.

FYI: Just got a quote from Ray Crowe for a battery box cover and driver-side A Pillar trim piece for my '94 R2 (LHD). Tasca Parts was less expensive with cheaper shipping as well.

Problem with a lot of the online parts sites for different Mazda dealers is that you never know if they actually have the part listed in stock or not (or if its NLA). At least that was my experience. I called around to a lot of the different dealers regarding a complete passenger side interior door handle (grip and all) since mine was trashed. NOBODY could get them. Even Atkins didn't carry them. Ray came through though and was able to get me a brand new part straight from Japan. I've found Ray to be cheaper than Atkins, but Atkins usually has the parts in stock and their online site is great. I've ordered from both Ray and Atkins before and it usually just depends on whether or not I can wait for a particular part or not. Both are great.

Ray always has fair prices - maybe not the cheapest, but you're not getting taken to the cleaners. Big thing is he can many times find parts that others can't and can give you a solid answer as to availability.

Atkins does have a great website and fair prices, I've ordered plenty from them.
