New member and looking for a 3rd Gen

Hey all, Ive been doing lots and lots of reading on the 3rd gen and what to check for and what to do ASAP, and the maintance and cooling issues and whatnot. I am familiar with rotary engines, they have always facinated me, and I am no stranger to modifying cars in a proper way, but since im new to the rotary thing, i have a couple questions.

My plans are to make sure everything is ok before modding but in the maintance is also mods...

I planned on getting a full turbo back exhaust so that i wouldent have the cats to deal with because of heat issues. I read on one post that making the engine breath too much can cause detonation. I also wanted to do a nice intake to the turbo's with K+N filters and some pipes, and possibly IC pipes. After that i dont really want to mess with the engine too much, With the intake and exhaust will I need to richen up the car some? I have an Apexi SAFC I can put on the car as well, but would getting a modified ECU be a better solution? or is this even nessisary at this level of modification?

my other question is on this AST thing. I have looked at it on my friend's RX7 and i thought this was like a vaccume can or something. But, i see two solutions to this issue, one is to get aftermarket can, and the other is to eliminate it. What would make me spend the extra to get the aftermarket instead of just elimnating it? what are the differences?
also what does this tank do?

other then that ill probably do some brake mods and suspension, im kinda tossing around the 99 look but this is way far down the road. I just want a nice car.
any help is greatly appreciated.

Does exactly what the name says... Air Seperation Tank. There are plenty of debates on to upgrade to an AL tank or get rid of it.

Selling My FD

If you're interested, I'm selling my 93 FD.
It already has 3" straight through exhaust.
HKS downpipe, Mindtrain Midpipe, and Greddy Catback.
Also has Apexi power intake, RB 8mm wires, Koyo radiator,
boost & A/F gauges, pedals, shift ****, turbo timer, Cusco
tower brace, Apexi Power FC and a rebuilt motor with about 8k miles on it with a street port. It's red with tan interior.
I'm asking $13,500 for it.
E-mail me for further information.

as for the exhaust and intake if putting this on my car am i going to need a fuel mod as well? i dont mind spending the money if it needs to be done and to be done right but I just want to know. I need to sell my current cars before i can score my 3rd Gen but ive been doing my reasearch before i buy.

GVR4,

The #1 killer of these motors is detonation, and it is usually caused by running too lean as a result of increased boost. Adding a straight through exhaust and intake will definitely increase boost to unsafe levels. The way to get around this danger is intercooler + fuel. Do some searches about boost creep and a/f ratio. Also read the posts in the useful links sticky - a lot of good info there. Here is one link to check out, it contains a lot of good advice:

Good luck and welcome to the club!

well, heres my next question, i know for a single turbo car, a better/bigger wastegate would cure any and all boost control issues. can't i just put a good wastegate on the car or if needed 2? I have a good friend of mine who knows a lot about the car as well. He is telling me that one should convert the car to a tandem turbo setup, not sequential anymore and tie both wastegates into 1 external. He also says this eliminates alot of vaccume/boost lines, which makes ones engine bay alot simpler and easier to diagnose when a leak is there.

yes, all boost control is based on flow for the wastegate. if changing to a external which can extreamly outflow and control the boost, then these overboosting issues should not be a problem? Am i off here, cause i know on most any other turbo car this is the best solution for any boost control issues.

This is not possible unless you design your own turbo manifold... the stock manifold will not work for your application (external wastegate).

There's only one stock (internal) wastegate for both turbos.
