Unhappy New Instrument Cluster with hidden problems

Hello, I want to share with You my experience:
I bought a Mazdaspeed cluster, since the signal lights were different i just swapped all the gauges.
Working good when tested, until after the swap the buzzer started to sound.
After a lot of search around the car to look for some problem on my wire, I found that the problem was the speedometer.
But why the buzzer didn't sound at the beginning?

Check for spot, It was intentionally made to cut the wire

Because the rail of the pin n°8 has been cut (i checked the continuity between the start and the end of this rail and there was an interruption. Is correct to say rail?)

This also mean NO warning in case of over rev, low coolant and may be some other features.
I paid about 1200$ (seller from UK)
Now I'm considering to offer the seller 800$ for the speedometer not working and for the flex map damaged.

Just don't know if this guy bought like this or was him self doing this fraudulent action.

What do You think?
Thanks

Pietro,

I cannot offer an opinion on the advertisement because I don't know what it claimed. Maybe the previous owner wasn't aware of the problem?

You have a sharp eye to catch the problem on your instrument cluster flex print. I understand when you say rail #8. In the US, it is known by several names: solder run, solder trace, or in short - run or trace.

Is the run severed or is something stuck in the run?

I could argue this run was disabled because an aftermarket ECU may have been used and the Body CPU was constantly sounding the alarm. The break looks intentional because it is in 2 places and is hidden by the dashed lines of jumper wire locations for J6 and J8.

You could remove the flex print from this suspect board and use your flex print from the old unit. That may not be the ideal situation but at least you can verify the flex print from the new unit is causing the problem.

Of note, do not use a normal solder iron to fix the broken solder run. The heat from the solder iron WILL melt and damage the flex print. I recommend that you find an electronics shop who can repair flex print with special tools.

Pietro,

Good luck with that. What's wrong with the speedo? How does that circuit board look? Do you have any other pictures of the damage to the flex print - a different angle? I'm interested to learn what punctured the flex print!

Dear George,
The speedometer looks new and perfect even saw with magnifying glass piece in any angle with attention. Only imperfection was the switch of the resistor R15 to switch the counter from km to miles. But was working good and no intersection between any solder trace (thaks for terms teaching )
The only thinks wrong is the buzzer, all the rest is working perfect ( I made just a little run of 1 minute at slow speed due to restriction for Covid-19)
So for half price (if he accept the deal) I will try to fix it with the help of Your super threads
Tomorrow i will shoot a different and better pics.

Regards
Pietro

Pietro,

I am happy to help. Do you know what to look for a bad component on the speedo circuit board? When you are ready, I will be here to help more.
