New how-to's from the weekend - door panels!

Hey guys -

I'm continuing to try and document the various work that I do to my car. This weekend I replaced the VERY blown door speakers on my '94 R2 - man, what a difference!

New writeups -

Driver's side door panel removal -
http://www.clubrx.org/default.asp?id...ntent=21&mnu=5

Passenger side door panel removal -
http://www.clubrx.org/default.asp?id...ntent=23&mnu=5

Passenger side window switch cleaning/rebuild -
http://www.clubrx.org/default.asp?id...ntent=22&mnu=5

Review of the JDM ashtray/armrest -
http://www.clubrx.org/default.asp?id...ntent=19&mnu=3

I've gotten a number of positive comments from you guys on Part 1 of AC and your FD, and I am working on Part 2, already have a bunch written for it. If you missed Part 1, here's the link -
http://www.clubrx.org/default.asp?id...ntent=15&mnu=5

Enjoy!

Thanks! I plan on it - there's TONS more to be done and documented on the car . I can't wait until I get everything done on the convertible so I can sell that - with that out of the way, I can REALLY get busy with the FD.

Too bad I didn't have this writeup earlier... the one on carstereohelp didn't document that there was a hidden screw.

Great write-ups.

The following statement is the AC section is not strictly true though:

You can still buy R-12, but it's quite expensive - about 10 times the cost of R-134a!
I guess if you go to a shop, this may be the case - but cans of R-12 are available for $20-$30 on eBay. Yes, you have to be certified to buy them, but the certification process is pretty straightforward. Go to:

http://www.imaca.org/condition.htm

print out the manual, pay $15 to take the on-line test, and you are an EPA certified technician and can buy all the freon you want.

Did it myself last month and it was not hard.

Lots of people have complained that R-134a conversions do not do the trick for them, so it may be worth drawing attention to this.

[Edit: just noticed that you did mention the certification tests at the end of your article, though you seem to imply that certification is needed to buy the R-12 substitutes. I don't think you need certification to buy any of the substitutes.]

Very nice write-up Dale.

Did you hire a hand model?

I'll do some clarification on the AC section - thanks for the feedback! Many of the R-12 substitutes do need an EPA certification to buy, though. I know I had to produce mine to buy some Hotshot back in the day. Many of those drop-ins use R-12 blended with other things, so that makes in necessary.

So you like the hand model, Jeff?

I'm stuck on the door panel removals. I got all visible screws out and the panels budged, but wouldn't come completely off without forcing...

Did you follow the FSM? That is what I did the first time I ever did it and it was good.

I have the drivers side out just fine but the passenger side on my fd wont come off, like there is a screw hidden behind the pull handle on the panel....... cant see a place anywhere for it.

Any help?

The links are dead

I am in Japan now and all their books are in Japanese, makes sense, but doesn't help me. I ordered a book online but it is taking its sweet time to get here.

Thank you.
David

Oh that's where that screw goes. By the time I got done disassembling I saw it just sitting at the bottom of the door panel. Everything is so fragile and brittle on these cars.

Yeah ended up getting it thanks! What was catching me up was the clips that go around the sunroof and in front of the hatch!
