New HKS EVC problems
I just got a nice new shiny EVC EZII last week, same as the EVC 5 minus the display screen.. same stepping motor etc. Well I have had nothing but a headache trying to get it to work, I posted to the HKS forum in hopes of a reply soon.. if not I am going to call their tech line which I hate doing. Here is the post from the HKS forum:
I just picked up one of these new units last week, finished installing it on my TO4 equipped FD RX-7. Went out to test it and immediately hit boost cut 1.1bar! Thank god I didn't blow my motor, but now I can't figure out why it isn't opening the wastegate. I disconnected the O line that runs to the top of the wastegate to make sure it will still open, it opened up just fine at 10psi like it should. As soon as I put that line back on it was boosting too high. The unit in the car is also blinking at me, whether it is 'on' or 'off' the power light just blinks over and over. This is not the A or B setting button blinking like described in the instructions. I've also already tried turning the ***** clockwise/counterclockwise to no avail.. there is no previous boost setting locked in that I can tell.
I am positive I have the stepping motor installed correctly with the lines run correctly, I've done tons of boost controller installs before so I know nothing is wrong there. Is there some sort of communication problem between the control unit and the stepping motor that the blinking is indicating? I also reviewed some old EVC4 instructions I had around and it looks like you guys switched the 'O' and 'I' ports on the new stepping motor..is this true or are the instructions with the EVC EZII wrong?
I just wanted to post this in the hopes that someone else has had this problem. I recently spoke with a MKIV owner having the same problem I am. I am not intending to drag down the HKS name at all, for all I know I could have done something wrong on the install and used a bad ground..who knows.

Seriously, call HKS. Hands down, they have the BEST tech support. I've called and asked how to set up an ancient EVC I for use with an external wastegate, and the guy knew how to change the internal DIP switches off the top of his head! Very friendly and knowledgeable.
Give 'em a call and see if they can't help you out.

I did give them a call, and I completely agree with you. I try to stick HKS stuff most of the time, especially on electronics for their customer service as well as quality. The guy was very convinced that something was hooked up incorrectly, I tend to agree of course. The unit lights up fine and turns on so there is no power or ground problem, all the vacuum lines are correct, so there is some break in the communication between the control unit and stepping motor that is causing it to blink over and over. With my luck the harness between the two isn't pushed together tight enough, or something really silly/easy like that.
i have an evc V and its still not working correctly. it has a port for both the hotpipe and coldpipe, to adjust for pressure drop. make sure those are installed correctly, also there should be a switch on the back of the unit to choose between internal and external wastegates, i still havent checked that on mine yet. im having a problem with holding boost above 12psi, maybe we both need to check our actuators?

Well I know I set mine for external wastegate (PO I think) like it should, I did that before I did anything else when I opened the box. I am checking it tonight when I get home.. I really hope the stepping motor or something else isn't f'd up.
nah i wouldnt be worried, i have nothing but HKS parts (barring the boost gauge) and have never had a faulty part. of course it could happen but i wouldnt be worried. make sure the lines from the stepping motors are tight and the line filters are installed. you could try teeing off the coldpipe line instead of using one for the hotpipe and one for the coldpipe, maybe the pressure drop its using isnt working properly for some reason.
also, can you add on the lcd display later? if so id recommend it asap, those ***** were really craptacular, if you got the LCD you can be sure about the boost you are setting

Ok, figured out the problem. The unit needed to be reset completely, and I had to call and get a head HKS tech on the phone to figure out how to do it. Why in the heck HKS does NOT include 'how to reset your EVC' in the instruction manual is beyond me, it makes no sense.

To reset the EVC 5 turn your ignition switch to 'ON' but don't turn the car on. Now press the power button on the EVC and hold it down for 1-2 seconds, and while still depressing the power button switch the wastegate selector on the back over to the opposite side. The EVC unit should beep to awknowledge the reset and you are good to go. One sure sign that your EVC needs to be reset is if the power button is flashing on/off constantly, the A/B boost setting buttons may flash but that is a different situation that is described in the manual, the power button flash however is not described and neither is the reset procedure. One extra thing to note is that mine did not like the wastegate selector being switched with the unit off, I tried this after the reset and it returned to the flashing mode.. I am guessing this was the original problem as I immediately switched the selector to PO when I opened the box before installing it. It is sent out with the switch on SW from their factory. After resetting the unit a second time I flipped the selector over to PO with the power on and it beeped to awknowledge the change, no more blinking power button either.
