New Harness for 5 Swap - Opinions Please

I am in the middle of a 5 speed swap and had decided to freshen up the original automatic engine harness (rewrap, replace broken connectors), or use a 5 speed harness I have and freshen it up. They are equally crispy and over 50% of the connectors on either harness do not meet my approval - either broken clips or broken/bare wires where they enter the connector on back.

I am soooo sick of ******* with these harnesses. I would buy a used one - but I'm sure I'd end up with the same problem I have with the two I got.

I am considering buying a new harness once I can convince myself to unass the $800 or so it is going to take.

I am looking for opinions - is it easier to buy another automatic harness and splice the 5 speed pigtail in OR should I get a 5 speed engine harness (cheaper) and modify it so it will connect to the automatic body harness?

In my opinion i with just work with what i got, which mean i with run to pick and pull and get some mazda connector and while at it, rewrap the whole damn wire to make it heat resistance and pray that it hold up.

Hello again 7dust - I have done three total swaps and my advice is to use your auto harness, unwrap it, replace the bad connectors and eliminated the unused ones ( rats nest if you wish ). You will need to splice in the 5 speed harness part that goes down to the transmission. Rip out all of the old auto trans wiring and transplant the manual in it's place.

Now it's a little more complicated that just typing it out like above, but it's far easier, connectors mesh, and the car will love you for it.

^^^ I'm not opposed to repairing the harness but I don't **** in the wind either. I bought about $40 worth of shrink wrap, solder, and self fusing tape to do the job. I started the project with good intentions.

Once I started tearing into the harness I discovered that 90% of the connectors do not meet my approval - and I'm not that picky! All in all, I would rate my automatic harness a 3 on a scale of 1 to 10 - many broken connectors, wires exposed where they enter the clips on the back, and many broken/exposed wires.

The only connnectors that look good are the rats nest (which I am keeping for the sequentials).

I would say that I need to source all of the water temp plugs, the fuel temp plug, air temp plug, TPS plug, boost control plugs, crank angle sensor plugs, injector clips.... you get the idea.

I am flat out scared to buy a used harness on the forum. Heck, I have two FD harnesses, and a RE harness for parts and still can't make a whole one.

Cheap plug, but I have a completely brand new, zero miles oem harness. . . follow the link in my sig. $750 shipped, insured. All the connectors are brand new to boot
