New FD Owner :D

I am now officially an owner/driver of a new FD!

It's got the typical '93 features that come with all the cars:
-cracked interior door panels
-broken passenger door handle
-misc paint chips
-No AC
-No PS
-No Heater
-No Cruise Control
-10-9-10 mpg...
-leaking something under the motor
-fumes inside the car after driving. fuel/oil maybe?
-Greddy Ti-Exhaust that is loud enough to annoy the neighbors at any time of day.
-Rebuilt engine with enough mods to make a V8 cry momma.

So a couple annoyances I've found so far are:
-Under heavy braking or from a sharp radius turn, the headlights will flip up and down (like the alarm going off)...until I flip the lights on and back off to close.
-The exhaust setting off car alarms so far away I can't even hear the alarms go off.

I don't have any clue where to begin to fix the light issue, but the exhaust, I was thinking about getting one of those Apex'I Active Tail Silencers (~$150). Could this cause any harmful/negative issues with the car/engine current tuning setup?

Thanks,

~CYD

Hmm.....sorry you think those are typical items of an FD.

The headlight thing is most likely due to exposed wiring occasionally grounding out on something....or you have some electrical nightmares going on.

Running an exhaust silencer is more restrictive than running a stock exhaust, just get a quieter cat-back (like the Racing Beat). Your car also likely has a midpipe and it may not be resonated (may be straight pipe instead of having a muffler inline).

I believe all the problems are minor.
There is an HID headlight kit installed that has a switch for the HIDs, so I am hoping that it's something related to the wiring inside the steering column area and not something deeper.

Pineapple will be taking a look at the car in a couple days to validate a healthy motor (I hope).

It has a Custom downpipe, with a petit racing mid-pipe to the Greddy Titanium cat back exhaust. To maintain a similar flow but to reduce the noise, perhaps a resonated midpipe is the best solution? I've read about the resonated mid pipes but I have not seen who carries/sells them. I would really like a silencer for in town driving/Emmisions testing to pass noise levels.

I know the lack of AC/PS/ABS is not common on FDs, but they are not unheard of either...albeit removing them for a reason, not just because they stopped working.

Another pic:

I hope so too, but you should have done this before buying the car.

Go to rx7store.net....... Trust me, just get a quieter exhaust. A silencer makes less power than stock exhaust and then you have to deal with removing/reinstalling it. And it has nothing to do with emissions, which you will not pass with the car as is.

Please do yourself a favor and have a rotary shop confirm a healthy motor BEFORE you buy an FD next time...

Welcome, and fix all of those pesky problems as soon as you can

If you do end up going with the ATS, make sure it will fit in your exhaust tip. There's a 90mm (3.5 inch) version and a 115mm (4.5 inch) version.

Correction:Some of the problems you mentioned such as broken interior pices are common, however misc. paint chips will happen to any 14 year old car,and don't blame having no AC/PS/CC on the FD,blame it on the previous owner.."Typical" things on a FD are usually because of "typical" owners.

Doh!, I am hoping there won't need to be a next time, and if so that it would be for a CYM roller that I won't need to check anyway... LOL

I know there's a lot I should've/could've done differently, as this was an out of state purchase based purely on pics and email QA...but I decided to risk it.

If it had been a local purchase, I would've had the compression check done prior to sale. But live and learn I guess...I 'll find out on Thursday.

So far so good...
-Car actually arrived...and looks almost as good as it did in the original pics.
-It starts up reliably
-Has all the visible mods listed...
-For the most part is pretty much what I expected for a '93 RX7 with 127K+ on the body. (~2000k on motor, as opposed to the newly rebuilt motors that are "still in break-in period <500mi" that I was recommended to avoid)
-I did purchase from what I gathered to be an honest/reputable rx7club forum member; They do exist right

Then again for what I paid it's all really hanging on how mechanically healthy it turns out to be at Pineapple. If it's a healthy setup, then I think I got a great deal.

Wow..You sure have some guts buying a car you didn't inspect personally or even test drive..I hope it works out well for you.

Hey congrats on the purchase. Hopefully you're motor is in good shape and you didn't get screwed. Car looks good. And let me tell you that GReddy Ti is insanely loud. Just get a resonated midpipe to quiet it down and not restrict the flow of the exhaust. Does it have an upgraded ECU?

better hope it has an upgraded ecu or good boost control, which is unlikely with that exhaust setup.

I believe it does... I will update the pineapple findings on Thursday...if everything checks out ok, I will be the first to give kudos to the seller.

A/C is not needed in the Pacific NW. I removed mine and don't have any problems without it. Just "extra weight" and clutter in the engine bay that's not needed. But, the FD is much more comfortable to drive with PS than without.

Lol, piloting what's essentially an F-16 without wings isn't supposed to be comfortable

i got mine in to. and besided the pillowballs need replacing, broken drivers side door handle, hood and trunk hatch need repainting (all of which i was aware of before i bought it). also the antennae does not retract fully, the radio is inoperable, the inside drivers side door panel is loose when you grab it to close it, the two front tires have a slow leak, and the interior is worser than i thought (all of which i was NOT aware of).

the engine runs good, only has 33k miles on (reman), and i paid 10k for her. so i still think i got a good deal. but if i were to do it again i would have definitely looked at the car in person. and yes i got mine from someone off this site. that is all.

The resonated midpipe will help, but will probably still set off alarms of cars you park beside! I agree with the Racing Beat catback suggestion if you are looking for somthing to quieten it down and still flow really well. It is all up to you though. Good luck on the new buy and getting the kinks worked out of it.

Got the results back from the inspection and compression test! Results were positive!

The compression came back:
Front: 6.4, 6.5, 7.0
Rear: 7.1, 7.0, 7.0

There were a few issues (minor I think, nothing another grand can't tidy up) but I believe this car is worth way more than I paid for it.

Now it's just a matter of getting it to pass emissions and registered

I am a very satisfied buyer, that purchased from an honest user on these forums!
