New 3rdGen Owner!

Hi I have been online for 3 years now. Sold my 2nd gen to get through school. Now I work in Kuwait as a Civilian Contractor making $$$ and found this 3rdGen AUTO for 5000$. It has over 200k miles on body but rebuilt engine and turbos. 9.8-9.9 compression. Says drives great but short keeps the battery dying. I bought this car near L.A and I come from San Diego so I can drive it when I get back or otherwise visit. I have a couple of questions.

Is this a good deal?

How much to convert to Manual? (in late future)

Can someone point me to a link that does a checklist for the autoversion like the 10-8-10 boost exc exc.

Can we throw a party?

I really feel like buying a 3rd gen for the first time is like being saved. You feel like you are suppose to levitate or something.

it really sucks converting it to a 5 speed though but since you're making all that money now you might as well buy a 6 speed greddy tranny for 7 g's and have one hell of a tranny that don't shatter as soon as you go over 400 hp

What units are those compression numbers measured in?

Assuming you're talking kg/cm³, 9.8 - 9.9 compression is unrealistic. Mid eights to nine is about the limit. Hopefully the person doing the test was qualified and knew to use a warmed engine and adjusted for RPMs - perhaps that could make for such high values.

Auto FDs use the same exact turbos and control system, so a boost gauge should show 10-8-10. Really, both types of transmission are fairly typical for all sports cars, so you don't need special info about them. Its the engine and the rest of the car you need to pay attention to.
http://www.scuderiaciriani.com/rx7/buying.html and http://rx7.voodoobox.net/infofaq/bguide3g/bguide3g.html have buyer's guides. Make a good checklist and if you come up with any uncertainties - pound at them until you're comfortable. I relied on my memory and didn't use a comprehensive checklist - and missed some things when I made my purchase.

The conversion to manual is about a few grand, and may take some time to procure all the little extra stuff like pedals, wiring, etc. Run a web search here to figure that out - many users have done it here. Put in a stock transmission - Greddy 6sp would be complete overkill. If you ever get to 500hp and want a better tranny, the $500-1000 spent on the transmission itself will be flyshit compared to everything else you've spent. As I understand it, the stock tranny is sufficient for 500hp or so. Before you upgrade trannys you'll want to upgrade the diff, axles, and PPF.

Go back through the newbie stickie at the top of the forum. There are many answers there that you won't even need to search for.

Don't sweat it. The buying process should take a long time and involve seeing plenty of FDs. In your area of the country you have plenty to choose from.

Yeah, you can make mucho buckos over there. When I was in Iraq, the frickin' *bus drivers* were clearing over $10,000 per month, tax free. I was offered a job as a facility manager in Baghdad for $14,000 per month tax free, but opted to come back stateside to help start up Gotham.
