Need serious opinion! Buying FD

Ok guys! I'm from down here in Ct. Im only 17. Im going for my license this thursday! Well i have 2 loves in life, One is my job (auto body) and the other is FD. Well ive been saving for one and i dont have ALOT saved up i have a few bux put away! Well my parents are going through a divorce and have been putting me through ALOT of stress. Well i was in New Hampshire this weekend and my father decided hes sorry for all they have done to me and decided hes going to help me buy my dream car! Heres the problem. I dont make alot of money at my job and im pretty much on my own (bills and ETC) so it will take me YEARS to save up for my dream which is a 5 speed VR FD with tan interior. I stumbled upon a montego blue 93 FD around the corner from my house! Heres the problem. My dad will help me up to $8K possibly. The kid who owns this car wants $8K. Its automatic I truly want 5 speed but i can live with auto for now. Now heres the real problem. He said the body has 140K miles on it and he has no idea what the motor on it has.! He doesnt drive it because he has a del sol hes dumping his $ into. Another thing is that he says the feul injectors bog out, like the old owner put new injectors in and the engine will bog out becuase of lack of feul. The interior is pretty fair. Usage shows. The car is stock pretty much, Needs to be cleaned and buffed. Im a bodyman so i can do all that no sweat. What i really need to know is should i buy this car and actually work my *** off to get my father to help me get it now? This car has been sitting for a year or 2 and the kid moves it regularly so it doent rot in place. Im really in a hard situation. This is my dream car Just a different color and Tranny! ???

I hope you can handle a RWD sports car with your limited auto experience. Be careful.

i would say hold out and wait for your true dream car.

Also if he doesnt know what the milage is on the engine then he obvioulsy didnt care to much about the car which means you could be spending more money than you have or want to spend just to get it running.

i waited years for mine and im truly glad i did i now have my dream car and i picked it up for 13000 with 41000 original miles on it.

Id say keep looking and gte what u actually want and dont settle.

While I'm going to sound like a callous old grump, this is simply not a good situation. It's also a really impractical car for CT half of the year.

As for the car you're considering, it seems like cheap is the overwhelming theme, and getting cheap in this car is putting your ***** in a vice. If anything, you could be setting yourself up to be so close but not quite there, and spending a huge amount of money in the process. It's one thing to stretch your budget for a nice, reliable, low mileage car that will serve you for the next several years. It's another to stretch your budget to reach the edge of a money hole. Life will be much better for you if you wait, develop your driving skills, get a couple years of accident-free driving on your record, and buy an FD when it's more comfortable.

Should you get it? In a word: No

What happens if the engine is already low on compression and then gives out a month after you get it? What are you going to when most of all the engine componets start to fail and need to be replaced?

While these cars are getting easier to get, they aren't getting any cheaper to maintain.

Yes listen to the people here. This is not a car for a first time driver. This is a car for people that understand that this is a money pit. Yes we call them money pit for a reason. From the sound of it the one you have your eye on, I would bet that is already blown, specially if it si not getting enough fuel. Get you a car that is realiable and makes a good first car. I'm not trying to say to get your grad moms 1982 volvo station wagon but for 48k there are other cars I would consider as a my first car. What i would do? I would buy the cheapest POS I could get and save the rest of the money till you can afford a really nice one like what you are looking for.

i agree with honda but if u do get a pos at least make sure it will run for a while or then you will really want to shoot urself and if its possible get a rwd car so at least u can get some kind of experience with the way they handle especially in bad weather and since ur in ct im guessing you probably get snow in the coming months.

hope you have another $4-5K handy when this car blow...IMO a FD is not the car for a 17 years old person with very limited income.

Go buy a 5.0L mustang for 4 grand...put 4K into it and I bet you will have more fun than sinking 8K into a sexy FD that don't run. $8K will get you a supercharged mustang with at least 400 rwhp...

Your Purchase of a FD3

I would listen to the many posts on this matter.
This car is high maintanence and requires a lot of
upkeep. I spent 13k thus far on maintanence
replacement and some upgrades since my
2/2005 purchase.

Well heres to all the comments! I agree im only a 17 year old driver BUT ive been drivingfor 3 or so years now on permit and not ETc. Im not saying im a pro But i have NEVER had an accident or anything. Ive driven many fast cars and many super shitty cars! The only reason this kid is selling it so cheap is becuase he bought it a while ago (like 4 years) for 8 grand and put some money into it and he wants what he paid for it! I agree with the money pit this but i already have a cari drive daily. This thing isnt gunna be a daily driver it is going to be a weekend driver. My whole life i was raised around cars bikes and tattoos. I work at a bosy shop with a guy who has cars with thousands of horsepower and he has let me drive a few of them and i think i did pretty good for myself. Im going to try and take some pictures of the car for you guys. I also do NOT like mustangs AT ALLL.. Most of the accidents of young kids wrapping themselves around trees were 5.0 mustangs! I wansnt asking for an opinion on my age to buy i was an answer on what you think of the car.! Im gunna go out on a limb here but the mo0tor looks REALLY new and clean so im gunna say it probably has loew miles. The kid said he barely ever drove it!? I just need to know whats up with the injectors.?

Ohh and the rear wheel drive thing! I have a 72 cutlass in my backyard and i was raised of F body Firebird trans ams! And i live in Ct so the winter is another thing. I know how to handle a posi rear end. Not like a person who has been driving for years but for someone my age i can handle better than most people my age.

so it's not your dream car at all... this should not be a hard decision.

if the engine is of unkown condition and it has fuel system problems it would be safe to assume it's going to need a rebuild in the near future. for someone without alot of cash that means a month or more down time and thousands of dollars.

also, body work comprises ~ %.01 of the cost of owning a stock FD. you're going to have to learn to turn a wrench prety well unless you're loaded. i learned on my fc and at my job at a local shop. now i finally found a project FD (face it, that's what a 13 year old sports car is) and have been steadily building it up on the side.

if you really want a 7, get an FC and save your money for now. you're not going to get a solid FD for 8k.

I agree with the guy who said to start with a 5.0 Mustang, I did and I'm SO glad that I did. It really taught me to respect RWD and what high powered RWD cars are capable of(and I don't mean speed, I mean the way the rear end likes to try to get to the front of the car if you disrespect it for even 1 second.). Even a 5.0 is a bad starter car, but I was stuborn at the time. A 2.3L mustang will be more reliable, getter on gas, very responcive to mods, and less likely to kill you.

I reccomend you stay away from the car that's for sale near you, it sounds like you don't have the financial means to back up a $8,000 FD. Buy a cheap FD to get it built the way you want, buy an expencive FD to have a good driving car right off the bat.

I highly reccomend you stay away from the FD until you have a more stable income and better know your financial limitations.

Heres an oppinion from a fellow 17 year old....
Get and FD, but dont get that one. My parents helped me out but nowhere near as much as yours are going to, I had been saving my pennys and dimes since I was 10. Dont rush into buying an FD, wait until you find a good car. I stole my car for 9.5k with new paint with only 18k on it and a new engine with only 5k on it, I had seen plenty of FDs before it though. I had an FD I looked at with a massive hole in the door, everything in the interior was broken, and the engine had warning lights that came on that "didnt mean anything". Another good one I saw had been repainted and it looked like it had been hand painted as paint was already chipping away. Both those car's owners wanted more than I payed for my car. The guy I bought my car from had it for 1 month, and he said he couldnt afford it, but he had all the reciepts of getting it worked on at a local rotary shop. You could tell it had been meticoulsly taking care of....And thats exactly what you need to look for when you look for FDs. The car your looking at the guy has no clue how many miles are on the engine? Thats terrible, or its just a plain lie. Also at 8k I imagine many other things cant be right on it. If you really insist on getting the car have the guy let you take it to a local rotary shop and have compression tested and such. If he dosent let you then dont buy the car, theres something wrong with it! There are plenty of people on here that have been ripped off buying used FDs. I've had my car for a year now, yes I bought it when I was 16. I have people ask me all the time if its new, not to mention I spend alot of time maintaining and working on the car myself. If you do get an FD make sure your taking care of it by letting the engine cool with the fans on and popping the hood when you can and everything, because if your like me....If the engine blows I have to sell my FD because I havent quite saved enough for my rebuild fund, but then again having 10k on the engine it isnt really a problem yet. Futhurmore RWD in the FD is a little different, not only is it RWD its stock 240HP RWD and only weighs 2800lbs, it only takes one small mistake man.

Concured...u are just 17 and a good driver...

What we are talking about here is the car, the 93-95 RX7s are very fragile, picky, and very expensive to maintain.

For example: It cost me about $300.00 just to replace the fuel filter...I was in a middle of a street tune so have no choice but to have the shop do the job.

Frankly I couldn't afford this car at first either...it was hand down from my younger brother which own it since 1994 and he kept it immaculately BECAUSE he have the money. I have a stack of maintenance record during his 10 yrs of ownership and the dollar numbers was high.

If you start out with a well kept FD then your chances are good...if not...walk-a-way. I know it is hard...my first car at your age was a 69 Mach I, 3 motors & 2 transmissions in less than 2 yrs.

sounds like you have already made your mind up, so why ask others that have no idea of how this will end up? But i would put money on it! I still wish you luck what ever you do, you will need it.

i am only 19 so i dnt much think age is an issue. but i do think that money is with condition the fd seems to be in. they are very expensive to make them reliable for one then the upkeep after u do the mods. i have put over 10k in mine and have only owned it since january.

Plus with injectors the way they are if ur motor is still good u will need to change them and if u do not have any experience with rotarys especially 3rd gens then getting through the rats nest without breaking something to change them is a feat in itself and can lead to spending more money.

If u already have a daily driver then id say stick with that for a lil while longer and save up some more money and find a VR 5sp that will be in better shape and ultimately more satisfiying.
