Need imput/advice ASAP!

Alright, I'm "MazdaSpeed93"'s friend with a GST. I've never touched a rotary engine before but I took up the task to change the plugs and wires without anything to go by. I got it all done and I have two 9's on top and the two 7's on the bottom. Left goes to the top left, top middle goes to the bottom left, bottom middle goes to the bottom right, right goes to the top right. I'm 99% sure that's right, I just want to make sure.

Now, when we started it up, there's hesitation/missing. All the gaps on the plugs were about 1.4 when I checked them out of the box, so I left them since it says 1.1-1.7 is good. But the plugs that were in there before looks like they had a smaller gap. I don't think that small of a gap difference is going to cause the car to run differently, but what do you think? And yes, all hoses, electrical plugs, bolts, intake gasket were put back on. It's not a huge miss, just enough were you can tell.

BTW, he only starts it up about every two weeks because it's in storage and it smokes like a MOTHER when he does. Then stops after it's warmed up. Is this normal for this car? Or where is some probable oil/coolant leakage going on in this engine?

Thanks for any help.

You got the plugs and wires right. What color is the smoke? White? Blueish? Black? and what does the smoke smell like? Sweet? burning oil? or gas?

You really can't gap the standard NGK plugs - just run 'em as-is. Not sure about your plug wire routing - I just use the labels on the coils. They're all labeled - L1, L2, T1, T2. L is Leading, which is Lower, T is Trailing, which is Top. 1 is the front rotor, towards the front of the car, and 2 is the rear rotor.

A slight miss is pretty common - it can be caused by a number of things. One common one is a slight problem with the primary fuel injectors, either slightly dirty or having a so-so spray pattern. It's nothing to be worried about.

Not sure on the smoking - could be any number of things. Keep an eye on oil and coolant levels and see if you're burning anything. You could also have leaky injectors - that's a possiblity, and fits in with the theory of the "spitting miss".

The smoke color is white. It doesnt really smell like gas or oil, i'm really not sure. I got the NGK spark plugs and the NGK wires from rx7.com. The only reason that i'm concerned about the miss is because before we changed the plugs and wires it never missed like it does now. So i dont think that it has anything to do with injectors or anything because it would of missed before. I'll go back into the car and check all the wires and make sure my friend put them all back on right. I'm sure he did but maybe one got put in the wrong place.

the two leading: short one goes on the leading closest to driver, also that wire goes on top. for the trailing, the farthest from driver goes to the connector by the oil...where you put the oil in. make sure that's all straight. NGK come pre-gapped.

the white smoke @ startup is normal, just condensation boiling out of the exhaust.........

in cold weather it will idle a little rougher till it warms up. also a very little blueish/gray smoke @ start up is normal as well since the rotary meters oil into the engine by design, that why it is so critical to check your oil frequently, as least once per tank full of gas, i check mine every other day if i'm driving it daily.

you'll also notice that in cold weather that it won't idle up very high when you 1st start it in the morning

Hey, this is the friend again. Turns out the little vaccum line off the TB got buried under the other hoses and we missed it. He says it idles fine now.

Smoke looks like it does have a blue tint, but can't really tell in a garage. So if it is oil, you say that's normal for start up? Becuase it's quite a bit. What's the usual life on the turbo's oil seals on these?

edit - I don't know why MazdaSpeed took my post and made another thread on this.
