Need Help With Stock Shifter

I was told the reason my shifter is loose is because my bushing needs to be replaced. I tried to order the bushing from Mazda, but it seems there are upper and lower bushings. Can someone please tell me which bushings I need to fix my loose shifter?

You should buy a new top and bottom bushing just to be safe, as well as a new bushing that goes in the "slot" on the shifter ball. You might want to inspect the small boot held down by three 10 mm bolts where the shifter goes on because it tears frequently and that's no good.

Yeah, the inner boot is torn. Do you know where I can find a pic to illustrate the assembly of it? I'm a little confused as to what other bushings I will need.

Mazdatrix sells the bushings and boots, and they have the metal bushings to replace the OEM plastic.

www.mazdatrix.com/g4.htm

and

www.mazdatrix.com/faq/ssinstal.htm which shows the short shifter install, but the process is similar.

I've also seen a 'kit' of all the bushings but can't remember who/where.

Thanks for this info. So I guess I would need the upper and lower bushing set and the middle boot kit. What about the bottom bushing and the groove bushing?

The easiest way to know what you need for sure is to just take it apart. It will take you less than 10 minutes.

1 - remove the shifter ****
2 - carefully pop up the shifter console panel; don't pull up too hard or you'll damage the wires for the buttons on the panel when it gives way
3 - using a 10 mm socket, remove the 4 bolts holding on the sealing boots
4 - using a 10 mm socket, remove the 3 bolts holding the shifter itself onto the top of the transmission... careful, it's oily in there! If there is no oil in there you need to fill it back up with new oil when you're done. (not all the way to the top, it will overflow and make a mess when you put the shifter back in... about 3/4 inch from the top is good)

Inspect all parts and you will know exactly what to get

I bought and installed one of those B&M clones and all I have to say is that it is the best $100 I spent in a while. Solid positive short shifts. There is a learning curve for the shifter since the gates are so much closer. Be prepared especially for the very close 3-2 downshift.

I do have a little rattle but my car is so much louder than stock that unless I am seriously listening for the noise I can't hear it. I was told that all the B&M style shifters are manufactured by the same company in Japan. The only difference I know for sure between the eBay ones and the B&M is that the B&M comes with new rubber boots and retaining rings. The eBay one only comes with the shifter.
