Have you tried asking the previous owner? Barring death I figure they'd be happy to tell you.

congrats on owning Kevin's FD. mostly built in the late 90s, there are still items on the car that are cutting edge. Kevin was a great guy and defined thinking outside the box. of course most know that Kevin is very unfortunately no longer with us.

the article i recall was in Turbo Mag in the mid/late 90s. he had taken his mostly (at that time) stock FD out to California and whomped a whole lot of cars. since he lived nearby i tracked him down in Minneapolis and buzzed up to meet him.

the black R2 was sitting in his garage sporting slicks and two TO4 turbos. seems Kevin liked to go out at night and race motorcycles w his FD. i spent a couple of hours looking over his R2 and ended up building my own design twin TO4 setup.

Kevin got caught up w his business and family and eventually enrolled in medical school. i had dinner w him a few months before he had a deer/motorcycle encounter that claimed his life.

i do not remember a magazine article on his car after his total rebuild.

we have lost some amazing people over the last ten years and Kevin was one of the brightest.

RIP, Kevin.

Howard

Is there somewhere I can go to read up on the car and the 'cutting edge' ideas he implemented in it? Definitely sounds interesting.

Your best option is to look at Kevin's older posts:

RX7Club.com - View Profile: Kevin T. Wyum

A lot of his work was prior to the RX7Club forum so you can also see if there are any archives for the Big List from back in the day.

Kevin says about his car:

Unfortunately over the last couple of years I've come to the realization that it's going to be years before I can put the car back together and dial it in etc. which is an extreme waste. I simply don't have time to play with cars anymore. I'll try to list what's in this car but probably won't remember half of it. This car was the quickest RX7 in the nation for a number of years in the 90's and also came in 14th out of 94 overall in the 96 One Lap of America (1st place among 1st time entrants).

This is a 1 owner car with approximately 41,000 actual total miles. 93 BB R1. The motor is currently out of the car because I wanted to have a machine shop enlarge bolt holes in the custom turbo manifolds to allow a little give when assembling the turbos. I never got around to doing it so there it sits.

The car has been stored in a humidty controlled garage and never seen snow etc. The car should probably be painted once everything is finished. It has original factory paint with years of screwing around under the hood etc. and also requires rear fender lips to be finished. They are cut out right now to fit the huge rear tires but it's not a finished look.

The car has a switching fuel system with the stock tank and a cosmo pump and a second 10 gallon fuel cell in the hatch area that feeds to a second large race pump setup (Aeromotive) mounted to the differential subframe. These feed -10 braided lines to the engine bay where it splits to three -8 braided lines to feed each rail. After the regulator the return is switched to send fuel back to whichever tank you want. The point obviously is to run race fuel in the fuel cell and pump gas in the normal tank. The pump that's running and the return switch are controlled via stock armrest switches where the ashtray is.

The turbo system is a one off complete custom setup using only the best components we could find at the time. The headers are made from inconel feeding two ceramic ball bearing TO4E hybrids with T3 exhaust side. An inconel bellows allows flex and differing expansion rates in the two headers without stressing and cracking anything. Everything combines into a three inch tube where the normal downpipe ends. There is one Borla XR1 straight through where the cat used to be and a second one where the normal muffler was.

Air intake setup is another custom job with 3" aluminum tubes leading from large 9" long K&N filters located under each custom fixed headlight and fed air directly from the opening where the combo lights used to be. The headlights are a custom setup that I'm sure people have pictures of somewhere. I think 2 sets exist. They look a little bit like the fixed 3000VR4 lights I suppose.

Coils are relocated to the frame rail to avoid heat. I think there's an Crane HI6 driving them. The ignition and fuel is controlled by a Motec M4 with all options enabled, data logging, advanced tuning etc. Includes 2 egt inputs with the drivers and actual egt probes (not mounted yet)

Suspension is ground control ride height adjustable coil overs with pretty stiff springs in right now, I forget the numbers. Shocks are adjustable gab super R's. Has M2's tubular trailing arms and I can't remember the types of sway bars, it's the big 3 piece one in front and I think a moderate one in back, eichbach I think. Rims are custom CCW's with275/40 17's in front and 315/35 17's in back. I forget the rim offsets etc.

The motor is a half-bridgeport with ianetti carbon ceramic apex seals. The total miles on the motor and turbo system is probably about 500. After that I got married, had kids and tried to do too many other things at once and the car has pretty much sat ever since. This car ran a corrected 10.98 @126ish on the stock block, obviously very little other than the motor was stock. It was never dialed in and raced on the new half-bridgeport. Tuned and tweaked correctly it should put out 600hp. This was street driven for those 500miles btw on the half bridge motor. It is very streetable and not too loud with the inline Borlas.

Obviously it has one of my intercoolers with a one off end tank with two inputs, one from each turbo. I'm sure I'm leaving a lot of stuff out but that kind of sums it up. Things that should be done to finish the car up, make a metal case to seal off the 2nd fuel cell from the drivers compartment, get the turbo bolt holes slotted larger to allow more wiggle room during install as I mentioned above. Then when it's all done do the fender lip and paint. The car likely well over $40k in parts alone

What do I want? I don't want money. I want to trade it for a relatively tame 93, 94 or 95 R1 / R2. I'd prefer black. Just basic mods like downpipe, air intake, exahust, maybe computer etc. lowish miles in good condition, good compression tested motor etc. I'm essentially looking for a turn key driver that I can have a little fun with. The bottom line is I really miss my car but simply don't have time anymore.
