Need Advice on Alternator Replacement for "94 FD

My car has been at Gothamracing for 14 months. It's just about done and they say I need an alternator. Any recommendations on a high-output alternator that will fit my car???

Thanx,

Ken

Do you have a massive stereo or anything in your car? If not, you don't need to upgrade - just get a good stocker. The stock alternator is PLENTY powerful - FC guys routinely upgrade to it, actually.

I'd like to find a thriftly 140amp one that fits my car.

I don't care if it's chrome or not.

Thanx,

Ken

GothamRacing has a 200 amp one for $600 and that is way more than I can afford. My bill is already up to $15k+ and I need something much cheaper.

Thanx,

Ken

I think Dale is right, unless you have a massive stereo, you don't need more than a stocker.

Steve Kan says I do as I have a second fuel pump that he says takes 40amps and I have a big IC fan that when kicked in takes some power.

I e-mailed crispeed's vendor, I'll post there feedback when I get it.

Thanx,

Go to Autozone and get a Duralast replacement alternator. Under 300 bucks and lifetime guarantee.

Replacement Alternator HO 180 Amp Alternator Part # 89235
Price includes our 1 year hassle free warranty.
Suggested Retail $735 Your Price $649
http://www.highoutputalternator.com/PDF/Web PDFs - Mitsubishi.pdf

Our alternator will directly replace the stock alternator, and interface directly to your car’s computer. No need for brackets or messing with the wire harness. The only change you will make is the output from the alternator to the battery. We recommend 4 gauge or larger.

I sent them a message that I needed less AMP and alot less $$$.

Their reply:
Sorry Ken,

We spec our models to the highest possible amperage, and that is the only model we actually build for your car.

Thanks,

The alternators from Mazda seem to put out a lot more current - I've found them to be of higher quality and put out more juice.

The stock FD alternator actually puts out around 130+ amps - it moves a LOT of current.

I don't see the extra fan and fuel pump causing *that* much of a problem. If your stock alternator is tired, sure, but that shouldn't be a great hassle.

So are you saying I should get a stock alternator replacement as my old one is going instead of the 100amp OEM replacement?

Thanx,

Ken

You'll be surprise how quicly the stock alt can run out of juice at high rpms and load.
Do yourself a favor and get the alternator.
The V8 Killa FD I did had the same problem.
It would only drop voltage when under full load in boost at higher rpms. Something you normally would not notice untill it's too late.
Listen to Steve. You're very lucky that he point that out to you and that's because he have a lot of experience.
What's cheaper? A $600 alternator or a bill for a new motor and turbo?
