Smile N00B in RX7 land..

Hi everybody, i'm a newbie rx7 owner, i just bought a black 93 rx7 R1 about two weeks ago w/ 16k miles on her . I've already put in a new sound system and tinted the windows, I want to go all out on this car, so if anyone has any suggestions please let me know. Looks, Performance, Reliability, everything. Heres a few pictures of the car before i tinted the windows and put in the system, i'll add those when i get them developed

Congratulations on getting a really nice FD.
Some great modifications that should be done are stainless steel downpipe, fan mod, eliminate your AST, boost gauge, and upgrade your radiator.

ok I didn't know, the dealership said it was an R1 =\. It's probably a base. It has tan leather seats but didn't come with a bose system, thank god. i would have had a hard time putting the new audio parts in.

Whatever the trim, it's a GREAT grab if it's even nearly stock and less then 50Kmi. Congradulations.

What kind of 'reliability' mods do you suggest?

is that 16k on the original motor? if so, thats the deal of the century!!! As far as realiabilty mods, i would say:

downpipe
Fan mod
upgraded radiator
Aluminum AST (or eliminate it)
silicone hose job
Boost gauge
water temp guage (or linearize the stock one)
turbo timer
Dont let boost go over 10psi on stock ECU
Change all fluids
Change Fuel Filter
TIRES TIRES TIRES!!!

im just typing off the top of my head, feel free to chyme in guys.

Get all your recalls done, if they haven't been, before any performance mods.

[edit]If you got the car from a dealer, then the dealer should have already done them. However, since the dealer told you that car is an R1, then he is probably an *** clown. Go to a Mazda service center and get your recalls done. Then never take your car near a Mazda dealer/service center again. [/edit]

having had some deceit in the sale (telling you its an R1)...id check further into the car before more time elapses...
usually a carfax can generate actual mileage..etc..

Alloy AST or get rid of AST completely??

Alloy AST or get rid of AST completely??

Can someone expand on the relative merits of each? I had a thought of making a carbon AST but it seems if getting rid of it completely is a viable option then maybe I should persue that.

Now that I've had it for a few months .... the plan is to embark on reliability mods ... it's my daily drive, if some extra performance occurs as a result - PERFECT!

Thoughts/Comments??

You can make sure if its a R1 by looking to see
if it has 2 oil coolers I believe thats the most
obvious thing to tell if its a R1 or not..

The R1's do not have SUEDE seats.. BTW
They are suede LIKE.. but its cloth..
Trust me I know. All the Cig burns in my seat
as proof.. Unles Suede burns like Cloth. I
stand corrected

As for the AST, get a metal one, Mazda put it there for a reason, and from what i read, by eliminating it was cause air bubbles to get trapped in the enging and develop hot spots.

The things you need to do are,

1.) downpipe
2.) have the hose and ty wrap job done
3.) boost guage
4.) change all fluids in the car

The elimination kit for the AST actually leaves a small space just below the cap for air to collect i believe...But yeah, that is the reason for the AST. I don't think anyone has gone wrong with replacing or eliminating it...just do something!
