My weekly contribution to the gas mileage threads

I've been driving my FD for a week now, and today I decided to finally see what my car was getting for gas mileage. I was preparing myself for depressing news, especially after reading the not-so-auspicious sounding threads that led me to believe I was going to be getting 16mpg on the freeway, 12 if I booted it often.

But to my surprise, my car ended up using a mere 9.7 gallons of fuel over 212.2 miles, coming out to a very surprising 21.876 miles to the gallon! Over that 212 miles or so, about 50% were freeway traveling, 40% around the city, and 10% stuck in traffic/waiting on a drawbridge FOREVER. I haven't even been trying to get good gas mileage, in fact I drive the car pretty hard, going into boost pretty darned often. So to say the least I was rather shocked.

I was especially surprised by the result because I'm using an M2 Stage III ECU, which from what I've read runs rather rich just to be safe. I'm interested to know how my gas mileage will change once I install my 1300cc secondaries and my SR Motorsports pre-programmed PFC. Greg from SR said that I would probably see an improvement in gas mileage, but we'll have to see.

This car is just full of surprises, I learn something new every day. Earlier today I found an empty road and raced my friend on his '04 CBR 600RR, and to my surprise, he only pulled 3, maybe 4 bikelengths on me by 100mph. Granted he did start at 7000rpm in second (45mph), but still, we were both very surprised by what the BPU FD could do...

Just set a new record on a trip to Vegas: 24.3mpg! No secret really, just set the cruise at 80mph, reclined my seat a bit, and enjoyed myself .

You and I are in the same boat except I get that with an average of city and highway driving. All stock with 43K miles except for downpipe. WTF?

I get 28mpg highway and low 20's average driving. Of course the mileage for 'spirited' driving can dip into the single digits. lol

Putting in the PFC tonight, and with a little luck the installation of the secondaries will go sorta smoothly. We'll have to see how the gas mileage is affected, but I say for the worse, since I'll be probably mashin' on 'da gas all da time, and with 1300cc secondaries I'll be using more fuel.

Dude, I'm telling you the key is to ditch the stock ECU. If I was getting 22mpg driving spiritedly on an M2 stg. III ECU, imagine what you could do driving conservatively on a well tuned PFC...

I get 400kms on a tank now driving pretty crazy.

Intakes, Pettit IC, HKS DP, Rx7store HFC, Apexi N1, power fc tuned by Steve Kan. Ohh and I removed the o2 sensor.

I one got 600kms from one tank driving like granny.

OK... OK... I usually get around 26-27, but I have logged 28 mpg more than a few times. I'm not the only one who has good highway mileage either.

Well after reading several threads about gas mileage, I guess the key is basic bolt-ons, PFC (well tuned), and staying under boost. With that set up and all the posts I have read, looks like a little above 20mpg is the average mileage. Not bad...still sounds high to me though. I'll have to try it out myself.

Short trips are what killed my gas mileage. When I used to commute to and from the University (~2.2mi round trip), I would get <10mpg. Now, when I used to go from my summer home to the university (~303mi), I have logged many 24mpg+ trips. On average, I only get ~17mpg on mixed mileage. I also run wider than stock tires, which I guess does effect it slightly. I also use a softer PSI setting on my tires, so that doesn't help with the gas mileage either.
