is it my turbos or my oil control rings?

my turbos were on their way out, smoking during and after boost... but during the 2 hour drive home from school last weekend, massive amounts of oil starting smoking out of the exhaust just cruising, totally out of boost.

so i pulled over and made sure the oil level was ok, added a little, and made it home (was only about 1 mile from the exit luckily)

i already purchased some good used turbos from a forum member (should be here tomorrow), but i was thinking what if it COULD be something else? has this happened to anyone else? i've blown a stock turbo oil seal before, but not bad enough to where it would make the car oil smoke even out of boost...

Ive never had a leaking oil control ring so i cant comment on that,,,,,but i have had a turbo so badly knackered that smoke pours out the exaust even when i was idling,,,, when u get the turbos off the engine
pull them apart u can tell if its them that are causing the smoke because oil will be leaking from behind the exaust turbine.

i had a similar issue, so i removed the turbos and ran the engine without them. to do this you must block off the coolant feed and run a line so the oil feed dumps back into the oil filler neck via the nipple on the side. then you will know what is the culprit since you have to pull them off anyway.

well, my rear turbo is "gritty" when you try to turn it, and it does not turn easily, so i'm assuming this is the problem, but before i do all this work reinstalling these newer turbos, i want to make sure they are really the problem...

damn i cant get ahold of an NA exhaust manifold. maybe i'll just use my blown turbos and not hook any oil/water lines to it and see if it still smokes.

ehh maybe i'll just bite the bullet and put the new ones on and hope for the best...

Whattapainintheass. Just get a working set of used turbos and install them. $150 and you could also solve your problem. If the rear turbo doesn't spin smoothly I guarantee you need to replace them anyway.

nope, ran the engine with no manifold at all............. when it's dark out you will clearly see blue flamage from the ports.........

put the new turbos on and went for a drive, no smoke. however, there is a massive exhaust leak where the turbines meet so i have to get back down there and take the intakes off to tighten the turbine section up

anyways, the "previously rebuilt engine" that is in this car actually has some hylomar left on the block from assembly, so it must be somewhat new. i had been questioning if it was ever rebuilt, but this kinda verifies it.
