Also R1s and R2s never came with cruise control.......... Just a thought......

So you have the 2 oil coolers, the suede seats, no rear wiper....... what about a stb? I mean, that's a lot of **** to go thru to make it look like an R1.....

OK....

Here is the article I saw showing a 1995 R2 with a sunroof. It comes out ofthe Mazda RX-7 Performance Handbook, 2000, by Mike Ancas.

dude just call your local mazda dealership and give them your VIN number and they will tell you if it is an R1 or a touring edition...or base....if its either then it was obviously specially ordered....my friend bought a silver R1 but it was automatic...because it was a special ordered one from the factory...pretty pimp

Looks like it came with gay wheels, too.

Many people try to duplicate the "more desirable" R1/R2 package by adding an extra oil cooler and the spoilers, if their car was not already equipped with them. The presence of a sunroof on that car doesn't prove anything. I'd have to see a build sheet or window sticker listing it as an option before I'd believe that it was a legitimate R2 with a sunroof.

Pretty suspicious, unless he's the first owner and knows for sure. It's far more likely that it just has the second "oil" cooler that automatics were equipped with to cool the transmission fluid, and someone swapped on enough R-model parts to fool most people.

Again, let's see the window sticker or build sheet.

Jimlab:

You're too cynical. Specialty orders are not that uncommon, I've done it myself. I agree with gdnirr0d. The most straight forward approach is to trace the VIN and read the results.

I have read that some of them did come with sunroof on 95 but only R2 and not in glass. I was reading this RX-7 book last night and saw that. They were discribing all the different types of RX-7 through out the years.

I don't know for sure but I believe jimlab is right. I don't believe the vin will tell you what "package" or equipment it came with. I've never tried a FD vin but I think with alot of the older muscle cars like 442's etc the vin won't tell you much.

Example:
JM1FD3311P0200001

JM1 = World Manufacturer Identifier (JM1 = Mazda)
FD = RX-7 series (FD = 3rd generation)
33 = body style (33 = coupe)
1 = Misc ID field*
1 = Check digit
P = 1993 (R = 1994, S = 1995
0 = Assembly plant code (0 = Hiroshima)
200001 = Serial number (300001+ = 1994, 400001+ = 1995)

*1993: 1 = US, 2 = Canada
1994,1995: 3 = manual seat belts, 2 airbags

No color information, no model information.

With what, a Honda?

Mazda was very deliberate about how they equipped the R-models. I seriously doubt anyone managed to get one with an automatic transmission. The sunroof is more likely, and I still won't believe it until I've seen proof. The R-model parts are far too easy to add to a car and people have had 9+ years to do so.

Not correct!! No silver R1's were ever made. Only 94-95 silver R2's were available. Jimlab is right the 2nd oil cooler on your friends car is for the transmission cooler.

i will post pics and let you guys know...............like i said it has everyhting the r1 has when i get it running ill let you know if it rides like ****, because of the stiff suspension. i belive it is a r1 the previous owner said it was a r1 and the guy before him said it was a r1 so im sure it is one. no one would go through the trouble to convert everythign to a r1 for the sake of it. the sunroof doesnt look factory it sticks up on the roof a line a bit like 1/8 in. or so. no cruise etc etc, no radio Bose system etc. if i had a car that had all that, i wouldnt take it out. besides isnt there a contrrol for the rear wiper or something. or there would be a wire harness cut or hanging arond in there if it originally had a wiper on the back? im stickng to it being a r1 but i must say jimlab knows his **** whether you want to admit it or not, i liek the fact that someone can say **** how it is and be firm about it. ii post the pics when i get the cable out of my girls car

This doesn't make any sense at all.

i belive it is a r1 the previous owner said it was a r1 and the guy before him said it was a r1 so im sure it is one.
Plenty of people don't know what they really have. Just take a look on eBay.

no one would go through the trouble to convert everythign to a r1 for the sake of it.
You wouldn't be wise to bet on that.

[B]no radio Bose system etc. if i had a car that had all that, i wouldnt take it out. [B]
But plenty of others would, and have.

Well, I have an R1 strut tower brace, R1 front spoiler, R1 "suede" seats, no cruise control, and no Bose... but no R1 rear spoiler and I have a sunroof. All I'd have to add is the rear spoiler, and I'd have an "R1" (well, R2 since it's a '95) with a sunroof. See how simple that is?

I wasn't trying to build an R-model, but that's basically what I ended up with. The R1 front spoiler just belongs on the car (the base spoiler looks like ****, if you ask me). I hated the tan interior, so I swapped in black carpet and R1 seats. As for the suspension, who cares? I have JIC coilovers. Oil coolers? Who cares? If you're not going to track the car, you don't need two, and if you have a single 25-row Mocal cooler, there's even less reason to have two.

Roberto, what you probably have is an R1 with an aftermarket sunroof. I wouldn't lose any sleep over it if it isn't, though. After 9 years, the differences between the various models have "blurred" considerably.

With no rear window squirter, that would be a good sign on a R1. It was located on the roof and squirted down on the window. That would have to be removed and painted over. That is a lot of work to do there ....

Roberto, does your sunroof have the "double bubble" shape? I would be surprised to see an aftermarket glass sunroof with the same shape as a factory one. It also does not make sense that it is from the factory since glass was not offered in 93.

The squirter is part of the hatch (pic below). Swapping the hatch for another would eliminate any visual cue of the car being a touring model from its exterior in regards to this.

I'm also with the camp that states its an R1 with aftermarket sunroof. With that said though, I don't know why the original owner or whoever had it installed didn't just buy a touring, and add R1/R2 features...

Ah good call ... but still some work! As you can tell I have an R1, so I don't see that squirter everyday.
