My R1 has a Glass sunroof?

WTF? I though that the r1 didnt have a sun roof? My car has 2 oil coolers, no rear wiper or squirter, the black suede interior, but has a glass sunroof with the switch panel in the car as well. looks like factory. the console for the switch is up by the rear view mirror. i had the dealership check the vin. R1 . but why a sun roof? im thinking it was put in because r1's dont have sunroofs? wierd huh? anyone else have this too?

That was put on either as a dealer option or it is an aftermarket job. Is the sunroof flush with the roofline? If not, it's the latter.

And did they tell you that you can't determine what equipment package the car came with from the VIN?

It's possible that someone added a second oil cooler and R1/2 seats, but no R1 or R2 ever came from the factory with a sunroof and the sunroof was never a dealer option. Your only other choice is aftermarket.

I read that mazda did make a couple of R models with a sunroof (but I thought it was an R2). I think read it in one of the RX-7 picture/history books but I do not remember where. I'll try and find the article.

Does the moon-roof slides back on tracks via an electric motor (you said that there is a console switch up by the mirror)? If so, then it's most likely factory.

Like someone mentioned earlier, you cannot tell the trim package (base/touring/R1) from looking at the VIN.

It sounds like someone bolted on the R1 goodies onto a 93 touring, and replaced the rear hatch. I noticed an earlier post about your VIN search that the car had a "JUNK TITLE" so there is really no telling what's been done to it, nor how much is original.

Yea I'm goin w/ the diff trim package w/ R1 options on it...

R models don't come with cruise control or tilt steering wheel, don't have the bose system, are 5spd manual, and the suspension is much stiffer than the other models. It also comes with the strut bar, but that can easily be bought and put on. Hmm...wut else...

As for the sunroof, I believe you get LESS clearance with a stock sunroof, plus it's utterly RETARDED to get a R model w/ a sunroof, because the R model is the performance model. It's the 2nd to lightest model (2nd to the base model, which is a couple pounds lighter), and the roof has a little bubble/dent in it that a lot of people dont notice/know about. Mazda found that with high speed wind tunnel testing, the bubble in the roof actually enhanced aerodynamics...

Cool

salamander, I read the same thing and it is in one of the Sport Compact Car Magazine.
I have the mag, but it is buried under a ton of other mags and don't have the time to dig it out to give the info for the month and year.
It was a black '95 R2, Fikse mesh wheels, Cobra or Viper lines and a T78 by PFS and suspension by Pettit.
The article even mentions the fact, that it is a rare R2 since the R models never came with a sunroof for an option.
So, I see 3 possibilities here:
1-the owner lied to the article writer, that it was an R model
2-the writer made a mistake by stating it was an R model
3-Mazda indeed made a few rare R2 model with a sunroof
Either way I don't care for a sunroof, they ALL rattle and leak in the end. Maybe I'm bias since I have an R1.

while ya never know...and it could actually be a rare R2, i still think it's retarded. the point of performance is just that: everything you need, nothing you dont.

that's why they didnt even come w/ leather seats as an option, since you need to be stuck to the seat in position if you're REALLY pushin your car. and the bubble up top...not only will you lose that w/ a sunroof, but you'll also gain weight...which is against the very fiber of the R models. I'd kinda hope that Mazda stayed true to their goal and ideology in that sense...

The stock sunroof still has the double bubble roof.

And to go along with this, all FD's had the double bubble. No Sunroof, glass sunroof, or metal sunroof, they all had it.

Yea i guess i should have clarified my statement...since no R's come w/ sunroofs, they ALL have the bubble. Ie, in the performance package, you just don't get rid of the bubble. It's a no-no

I've seen a silver r2 with a glass roof. I guess you could special order it that way.

Sunroofs will come painted OEM color. I know at least the 94's came with moonroofs (pic below), but someone else would have to chime in about the 95s.

I am almost certain that ONLY 94 tourings have the glass moonroof. There have been several threads about this and the general concensus is that it was ONLY 94 tourings.

Not true. I have never had a problem with sunroofs that are made in the 90's. Yes back in the day, sunroofs did leak but all those problems have been fixed. I wouldn't be surprised if modern day sunroofs lasted for the life of the car.

Just FYI, no FD came with a tilt steering wheel, and you'd never be able to tell the difference between the suspension of an R-model and another model, especially after this many years.

No, they're all fixed. I've driven two different R1s and an R2 and they're just the same as the rest.

Nope, you can't adjust the wheel in any of the models. The difference in the various models of the FD isn't that much, and with the exception of the sunroof or moonroof are pretty much easy to add to another model.

Thanks for the clarification guys. I stand corrected.

Ironically, I just looked up on the FAQ site, and it said this:

<< Apparently, one could order any additional option on a car (if one were willing to wait). I say this because I have seen options that weren't part of a given package... such as R1/R2s with sunroofs (they weren't suppose to have them). Also, spoilers were often installed by the dealership.>>

There ya go lol

im going to take some pics right now..........there is no cruise control, no tilt wheel, but i though that the squirter was actually on the body of the car and then changing the hatch would require shaving of it. when i took it down to my body man whos a rx7 body genius said it was an R1 he has a base, PEP, and a R1. the guy at the dealership prolly said that i gave him the title to look it up and some pictures. it has the strut bar. and no bose stereo. in the back its solid panels all the asy around the trunk section. BTW i was looking back there and saw the spare tire! kinda cool! Yellow Enkei rim. the car was taken very good care of! it just got hit and the insurance company said PPHHHHHHH the hell with fixing that ****! 400$ a fender my ***, sorry sir your car is totaled! heres your check have a nice day! so what the hell, I Belive it is an R1. ill post the pics in a hour. thanks guys!
