My new custom S/S exhaust... less than 13lbs... PICS

Hi!

I just picked up my FD last week after exhaust was made, and since I was pleasently surprised I decided to share it with you.

I decided for custom exhaust (midpipe + catback) - I already have the downpipe - from a top slovenian exhaust guy. He produces racing exhaust for some slovenian competition cars and he really knows his stuff. He uses mandrel bent pipes, s/s or titan and since he makes the pipes from very thin steel, his exhausts are extremely light. And the guy is really picky and meticulous and really does his best.

I told him my whishes for constant 3 inch inside diameter from midpipe to the catback, stainless steel and as light as possible. I also gave him measurements for catback and especially the tip, and provided him with some jspec sample pictures...
He said it will be less than 15lbs, it came out a bit less than 13lbs (5,8kg). The whole exhaust is polished and looks really good too. And I'm really pleased.

Tell me what do you think guys! Here are the pictures:

I think it looks very nice, clean and well fabricated. I do have one comment though and I am not an expert by any means but shouldn't the walls be thicker?

Is there any reason for the walls to be thicker ?
I was thinking that thinner walls cool the exhaust more, slowing down the gas movement on its way out ?

Looks good...Are they finished? What do they slide inside each other or something, there are no flanges.

Yes, they slide into each other, like on motorcycles. Flanges are heavy.
This exhaust is easily comparable to titanium exhausts in the weight department

Cost was $600 for catback + midpipe. I hope Soru81 doesnt mind me posting the price for this beauty.

With just those springs holding the pipes together, I would expect exhaust leaks. It certainly looks nice. I expect it will be very loud.

Thanks guys.

Cruiser, no problem for posting the price.

I don't think it so loud. Actually I have one bearing to replace, which is hell louder
No, seriously, if you aren't at the tail pipe it isn't too loud. I have expected it to be louder. If you're few meters away from the car it isn't loud at all. And it is A LOT MORE SILENT than downpipe, stock cat, and no catback

I did specificaly order to be as silent as possible, which seems to be dependent on the catback length. I'm satisfied. But it isn't the most silent exhaust I've heard, that for sure

If there's a chance, I will try to geet some sound clips of it...

Regarding the exhaust leaks, I tought that too - but apparently this is not the case. It's the same as on the motorcycles, where there are no problems. The guy even fabricates manifolds for NA cars - which have the same fitting manner, right after the flange. I think it is quite proven technique, but off course I will pay attention to any leaks. Otherwise, the pipes come really tight in to each other, but still there is some slack so the exhaust parts can move - which reduces load on the components so the chances of cracking are reduced.

Looks like good work, and I also think you owe it to us to get some sound clips up asap. Some photos of the exhaust mounted on the car would be nice too.

These are some pictures exhaust mounted to the car... I'm sorry, but they are the best I have so far. The car is only couple of days on the road, and it's still work in progress, so it's a mess right now. Luckily it doesn't see how dirty it is on the pictures...

Oh, and I will try to get the sound clip, but since I'm breaking in the engine it can only be idle + some reving in neutral. I will try to record it with my ppc, but I'm afraid it won't turn out too well...

Anyway, the pictures...

Is that a customized stock front bumper, or is it a after market. The openings look to be alot bigger than stock. looks pretty nice and should be better for cooling.

It looks like it sticks out far enough beyond the bumper to keep the bumper fairly clean, so thats nice. Hard to believe it isn't loud with a mid pipe. Maybe idle isn't too bad, but any acceleration has to be a different story.

Very nice. Were the exhaust hangers not yet added when those pictures were taken? The springs are for the expansion joints, obviously. How did you mount the exhaust in the car?

It shouldn't be an issue. A lot of aftermarket motorcycle exhausts are held together with springs. I should say though, that you're going to need forearms like Popeye's to stretch those little things on - they are tight!

oorx7: It is a customized stock bumper. It has about 6cm taller openings, so there should be some better cooling similiar to aftermarket or 99spec bumper. I like it because it looks stock and doesn't ruin cars lines.

adam c: Well it is loud, just not as much as I was afraid it would be. In the front of the car isn't disturbing at all, but at the rearend it's louder.

jimlab: Thanks. The hangers weren't made yet when I made the pictures. They are detachable from the muffler - they wrap it and look like a big clamp. Stainless steel, off course.

I know people have mentioned the front bumber...but what about the rear bumber. There are additional red lights near the liscense plate.

Actually, it's "rear fog light" only. Right one is fake, just a reflector
