Question My new 2000 FD - Stressing me out!

Howdy,

I bought a Blue 2000 FD on the weekend, with about 15k k's on the clock. The test drive was awesome, and it goes like a bat out of hell, but it makes a sort of quiet popping noise when its idling. Its almost like a bass kick, i can feel it under the seat, but only slightly. It occurrs seemingly randomly, a couple of times a minute. It still performs brilliantly though!

A bloke also told me it backfired when I changed into 2nd (he was walking on the st at the time, I was driving).

I have tried searching for info, but have not come up with anything.

The dealer put a bigger exhaust on it (as he imported a few cars, and one of them had many mods, and as mine was mod free, he took the exhaust from that one and put it on mine, as it is impossible to "comply" a car with too many mods). I am pretty sure he was a lazy bastard and didnt get it tuned properly, so am thinking that is the most likely culprit?

So is the popping noise just a tuning issue, or is it a danger sign? The dealer says its just a normal part of owning a rotary, bu then again he sold it to me!
I got the car checked out at another mazda dealership and it checked out perfectly (they beleived the 15,000 ks on it). They didnt perform a compression check, which is stressing me out majorly now.

Thanks heaps!

Mine was popping alot when I had the diahram on the ACR hooked up wrong. The car would shoot flames and pop every time I let off the gas. So what it came down to was a leak in the exhaust.

Thanks, yeah no flames to speak of yet, but then again i haven't really been looking, so you never know!

I think that there would be a pretty high chance that its somethign to do with the exhaust they put on it, as I think they probably would have done it on the cheap.

The other thing is that we have a 3 day cooling off period here, and todays day number 3 - so I could potentially walk away from it. Is this all part of the fun of owning an RX-7, or am I just being a little girl about it all?

The car's fine. A catback exhaust by itself won't hurt a thing. I'm extremely jealous, by the way

There are a bunch of Aussies on the forum. Might want to try and find one local to give you a heads up on where to take the car for service and give advice on what you are hearing. Can't hear much on a forum...

Congrats and good luck.

I have the same problem..When I idle the car pops very frequently and you can definitely feel it when inside of the car..I've been really worried but I guess a few responses in here make me feel a little better about it.

Well, I took it back to the place that checked it out, and got them to have a look at it again. Talked with a different guy, who wasnt so much worried about the popping as he was about the idle.

Turns out it was idling at about 1100! He didnt know much about it but had a mate at promaz (http://www.promaz.com.au/), who he called and diagnosed it over the phone as a vacuum leak.

I was pretty pissed off that my pre-vehicle inspection had missed something so obvious, and immediately started panicking about what else might be wrong. I spoke to Simon at MazPro, who offered to have a look at it today (since today is the last day i could return it), despite having a huge pre-xmas workload.

So I took it in, and long story short Simon at MazPro is a freaking legend! He diagnosed it straight away vacuum leak, but couldnt see where abouts so couldnt fix it on the spot. He did take it for a test drive though, and said it looked like a great, tight car and that the 15,000 ks looked genuine. He even said I got a great price on it!

So now its back at the dealers to be fixed under warranty, and I'm feeling fantastic about it!

Thank you to everyone whose helped. I'll get on the photos as soon as I get my baby back!

Cheers.

probably the exhaust was not bolted on properly and is leaking. Had it on my prvious wone as well. Some exhaust paste between the flanges and it was ok.

Just FYI, my FD has 8k on the current engine and a catback - its a jasma 3.5 inch with a 4 inch can.

I was driving down the motorway last night and i let of the gas after a long hard run and got a good 4-5 second long flame out the back of the car. I knew i didi because i could see the illumination in my rear view mirror.

My car pops, bangs and flames all the time and she's fine. She just likes winding up the cars eating my dust by spitting flames at them :o)

The sound you are getting could be attributed to the change in diameter from the piping before the muffler then going into the muffler.
