my near death experience...

Car: 1994 Rx7 touring white
Me: 24 years old 6'1" 185lbs
When: 6/23/03 Wednesday 5:30pm
Where: The Bay Area

It was an usual afternoon and I was browsing the Rx7 forum. Realizing that my girlfriend's b-day is coming up I decided to take a drive to the store to pick up a present. The weather was surprisingly sunny. Traffic was somewhat moderate with cars traveling 40-50mph. I was in the second to the farthest right lane getting ready to exit so I need to merge into the farthest right lane. There was a big car in front of me so I can't really see too far ahead. I checked my right side mirror and then over my shoulder to see if there are any cars. There weren't. Just as I turned my head back around there's this big *** tire (half a tire) sitting right in front of me (1 car length). So I rapidly steered further to the right to avoid it...which I did...and when I steered back to the left to straighten out my car the rear end lost its traction. Now my car is sliding sideway with the passenger side facing the front. In an attempt to regain control I steered to the right. Although I was able to keep my car from spinning, but my car was now inching closer and closer towards the center divider. Bam! The first impact was the front of the car. I saw the passenger airbag deployed and the hood folded up. I thought: "that wasn't too bad and shouldn't be too bad since I was only going about 40mph. The second impact is the right rear fender since the first impact caused my car to spin counterclockwise...

And the next thing that I can remember is that I'm outside of the vehicle getting up trying to get back in my car as fast as I could. All that was on my mind was that if I don't get my *** back in the car someone is going to run me over. Prior to the ejection I was wearing a hat and sunglasses. After the ejection I lost my hat, sunglasses and one of my shoes...and everything was bright as hell. I stumbled to my car and start her back up again and drove it to the side. Realizing what just happened freaked me out. I couldn't believe that I was actually ejected from the rear hatch! Some of you are probably wondering how the hell did I get ejected? It was the second impact that caused me to fly out. Also, I have a really bad habit of pulling the lab part of my seatbelt loose after I eat. Third, I was wearing nylon pants and my car has leather. All these factors caused me to be ejected out of the vehicle. There was blood all over. It was crazy...

I'm very very lucky to be alive right now to tell you this story. Apparently I landed head first since there's a big cut on the back of head, I also have a lot of bruises and road burns all over my body. Fortunately no broken bones or internal injuries.

I now look at life differently and I consider myself the luckiest person alive...

Wear your seatbelt and wear it right...

peace...

note the blood on the side mirror...

so long FD...

Glad you're ok dude.

Always wear your seatbelt correctly!! I just don't get it when ppl don't wear their seatbelts...it's saved my life a few times already and it's pretty damn obvious why car manufacturers include it in their products.

Take care!!

You should have just ran over the ******* tire.

I was 3 cars behind a dump truck at 70 mph. Truck hit a bump while carrying a trash container in the front of the truck. The lid of the trash can caught air, flipped up and impacted against an overpass, which ripped the 30 lbs steel lid with hinges flying backward. First vehicle swerved and spun out of control impacting against 3 other cars.

I avoided collision with all of these crazy **** and saw the thing sliding down the road towards me. I decided to just run over it. Blew my front tire at 70 mph, but I was able to maintain control and pulled over down the road.

Lesson for your next car, just run over the ******* thing. Worse you could do is blow a tire or break a wheel. Your FD car is basically totalled.

Any chance you want to part out the interior?

I'm feeling very very lucky as of now, after reading your post. I had an almost similiar experience last friday night. At first I was mad that I had to get my car fix, but now, that's a small price to pay.

here's the post
https://www.rx7club.com/forum/showth...hreadid=198397

But I'm glad to see you're ok, that's all that matter. Take care, and you'll live to drive another day.

Man I know that's hard watching that FD go away looking like that. Just be glad you are ok which I know you are and all of us are here too. Sorry about the car...she looked like a real nice one. I'm glad I've made it a habit to put on the seatbelt everytime I ride. I don't feel "a part" of the car if I don't have the belt on...just doesn't feel right. Glad you're ok

Wow,

I remember meeting you at the dyno meet in January, I helped you remove that plasic piece from the nose of your car. You are are a nice guy and I'm really glad you are ok. While I hate to see an FD destroyed, its replaceable. Please everyone be careful.

PM me if you need anything.

Man. So many FDs seem to be crashing out. I feel less safe with every story that gets told. I just bought one 3 weeks ago. Will better tires make us any safer? What will?

Sup man I'm also so gald that you're alive and well. I also remember you from the dyno meet backa few months ago. I had the red FD with black rims. I remember the things that we chatted about and what not.

You insurance will take this as comprehensive accident right?

Take care.

Man, you were lucky as hell. Glad you're ok

Are you going to contact Jeff about recovering the car? Every FD that he saves makes this world a better place

Um, if I'm not mistaken, comprehensive insurance covers damage(s) caused my non-collision, e.g. vandalism, break-ins, etc., no? Since he hit the center divider, I'm taking it that collision insurance will take care of him, assuming he's covered.

Anyway, sorry to hear of the mishap. Sh-t happens but count your blessings as you came out of it alive which we all are grateful for. Take care.

Man I'm real sorry to hear about that, but glad you're ok. You're very lucky, someone could have hit you while you were spinning, which would have just been really bad. Are you thinking about buying another one? Take care.

Glad to hear things are not worse. Get well soon.

BTW, you might want to see about getting a stock (airbag equipped) steering wheel on there before the insurance adjuster sees it. They may or may not give you a hard time over your medical claims.

Though you had scarier circumstances than most, I'm glad to see the 7 held together and another person made it out ok. Cars are replacable, people aren't, worry about taking care of yourself before car issues.

That's his way of saying he's glad you're ok :p

I find the FD to be a very hard car to drift and catch, although I'm told this can be dialed out.

Glad you're in one piece,

Best,

Chris C.
