My motor just blew. Any suggesions on a replacement?

My motor just died but thankfully it is covered under my extended warranty. Just wondering if anyone had any suggestions on what I should do. I was thinking about getting a new motor and turbos from Pettit. I have to get something that costs equal to or less than the OEM factory stuff. My guess is that I could get a motor with 3MM apex seals frm pettit for less than factory. I was also thinking that I could get the Pettit High flow twin turbos for close to $1500 less than the Factory ones.
I don't know what alternatives are out there or if this is good enough? What are your thoughts?

I did the factory replacement a few years ago. Why? I didn't know any better. If I had a "do-over", I would ship the car to Pettit for a rebuild.

If you go with a factory replacement, Mazda will not replace anything but the engine and turbos (since it's already assembled for them). So if there are any hoses failing or other parts that look *iffy*, Mazda won't touch 'em..

I'm sure a quality shop like Pettit or Pineapple Racing will take care of any loose ends when they have the car.

Yeah thats what they did for me, if you call loose ends an engine fire with the previous owner, he wouln't even let me get it until it was running good enough to where he thought i would be happy with it

There is no way that I would be able to get it to any other shop other than the one it's at right now. By the way i'm in New York and Pettit's in Florida. The guy doing the work knows all about these cars so I'm not worried about that. I'm just wondering where I should buy the engine and turbos? Should they be upgraded like the Pettit ones are? Would I need a new computer? I have never dealt with this before. I'm guessing that I can get an engine and turbos at a cost equal to or less than the factory OEM one. So put yourself in my shoes... WHAT WOULD YOU DO? Stock turbos? upgraded turbos? stock engine? upgraded engine? And which ones?

A few choices one of which the pettit rebuild streetport shipped to your door would be a good bet.
I have heard very good things about their motors. You may however have to supplement the
difference in cost as I believe their 3mm streetport goes for about 3500 ? Stock turbos will be fine if you
don't plan running more than 13.5-14 lbs boost max.
KDR rotory is another choice not that far from you maybe 4 hrs. There used to be a tech from
Orange ford in Albany that was decent but there seems to be a very scarce amount of them left
at dealerships most of us would trust our cars to.
BTW I'm near the Saratoga area.Who did you find to work on yours ?

I 'd go with KDR because they are closer. Or send it out to Pineapple and the get the 5 year warranty. If you ever wanted to go single, now is the time. Getting the stockers rebuilt or upgrades is more of a PIA and waste of money than anything.
Maybe we could get a group buy going?

I agree...

Skip the 3mm Apex seals....But get 2mm Hurley Apex seals...When you upgrade to 3mm seals you have to do a lot of machining to get them in. They just dont swap right in....

Also..Stick with stock turbos...Upgraded ones really arent worth the $. I had them an didnt notice the difference....Its the manifold that makes a difference

Ok here is my situation. I cannot get it to any other shop other than the one it is presently at due to the motor pulled, nothing to tow it and cant get the time off from work. As for the money figures the only numbers I have are the ones that I got from my local Mazda dealership. Approx $3000 for the engine and $3900 for the turbos. I DO NOT KNOW IF THE WARRANTY COMPANY WILL GO WITH THESE NUMBERS. I know that I can just replace it with a stock engine but since I have the chance I want to get something better. I don't think a single turbo setup is available (with intercooler) for what I can spend. So as for the turbos what should I do? Like I said the Pettit high flow turbos are $2400 which is $1500 less than the stock one (IN MY FIGURES). As for the engine I'd like to get an upgraded one but I'm not quite sure as to what street ported is, what the benefits or disadvantages are or cost. I do not know any of the other options out there. I just want to buy something that I can just buy and the second it arrives I can have it put right in without any other extra work. Apex seals (2mm vs. 3mm), street port or not to street port, stock vs. high flow? I don't know? By the way to the person who asked where I took my car I live in Glens Falls and I took it to Northway Car Care (they have worked on many RX7's) Thanks for everyones help

KDR does great work! i got my motor rebuilt by Dave for around 4100. That was streetported, silicon water seals, 2mm hurley race seals. Was worth it for me. I'm even in FL and I chose to stick w/ Dave @ KDR. Great company

You'll probably want to find out what your options are from your warranty company since your budget is limited by them.

Unless you spend more money on other mods, bridge port and single turbo are out of the question - no need.

If you are keeping things relatively stock, I would just get your engine rebuilt by KDR w/ perhaps some porting on the exhaust manifold and a 2mm seal. Shipping won't be too expensive and you know they do great work and offer excellent service. You can probably have Dave ship you a rebuilt w/ a core exchange or send your engine for rebuilt. If it's too expensive to ship the engine itself, you might as well have the whole car shipped. That way, if there is anything wrong w/ the engine/turbo, you won't wonder if they were installed or rebuilt incorrectly.

Like others have said, the FD is complex and you should have all the common problems looked at while the engine is out. Spending a few hundred bucks extra now can save you troubles down the road should anything else besides your engine/turbo go bad. If you trust the mechanic that your car is at, you can have him do it then.

Yeah I trust the guy that has my car. He has worked with 3rd gens a lot and knows what he is doing. I have been to KD Rotary and they are great. Maybe I shouldlok at their site and see what they have for engines. I could buy one off of him and maybe drive the core to him and pick up the new?

Since noone has asked I will, how do you know for sure ur turbos blew? Im assuming they've been looked at already? Also getting responses here for ur dilemna cld be a waste of time IF ur warranty carrier gives you a hard time w/ the quotes you received already. I think Malloy Mazda(<? i think thats it) has the best prices for stock Mazda parts in the NE, ya might wanna get ur prices from the and then see if ur carrier agrees w/ them. This way you dont waste any time speculating and getting urself disappointed shld they opt to rip you off.
The ONLY concern I wld have about getting my motor rebuilt & installed by two different places is a story I read not too long ago on this site. If you have a problem(or worse it blows again) a week or month after getting ur ride back, theres gonna be A LOT of finger pointing....You can bank on that! If ur mechanic is cool and completely trust worthy it may not be a problem. I wld atleast ask him what he thinks about KDR, if he bad mouths them then I wld definitely see that as a potential problem if a problem occurs.

Gdluck!

As for what I wld do, I wld give KDR a call ask them what ur asking us Im sure they wld have more input and experience in guiding you in the right direction. I dont know what kind of driving you prefer nor if the car is a daily driver.
