My guetto *** airbox mod
$6 total cost for the 2 inch pool hose from home depot.
I'm dropping a K&N Filter in there. Very easy to do. Just cut the hole in the top left corner of the airbox and then wire the hose to an opening in the belly pan. Then I cut a slit in the hose so that I could scoop the cold air under neath the car. I then zip tied the scoop to the belly pan. Let me know what you guys think. Don't be too harsh. It is what it is!
I think It will improve airflow

i agree with dubulup
but seriously, it looks like it'll work. Ghetto it may be, but should at least get generally cold air in. You may want some chiken wire or something similar in the hose under the car. Wouldn't want a field mouse to get the wrong idea...

I like the idea, and the setup. I don't like the scoop. The scoop will direct everything directly into your airbox. Water, gravel, bugs......etc.
I would cut off the hose just ABOVE the belly pan. This will allow the belly pan to act as a shield, deflecting away things that shouldn't get in the air box. The turbos will suck in all the air they need.
I would also recommend some sort of heat shield for your hose.
Did you keep the stock intake ducting?
Good job, Adam

I thought about doing it that way but I wasn't sure if enough air would've entered the box without some help(the scoop)

That's part of the beauty is that I had a clear path to the bottom of the car witout touching or being near anything hot. The only thing that is remotely hot is the radiator hose under the airbox.

Some friend you are...since you have nothing to do all day long, have him hull his RX7 over to your garage, and you can start fiddling with that!
I'll love you forever!!

I'm not really a fan of this type of mods. I've bought cars with mods like this, usually they break down due to a mod like this.
First, like everyone else is saying, that sucker will suck all the water in it can in the engine. Second it is way to low, the filter should have a clean source of air, not the dirtiest air there is.
If you don't have $$ to spend modding the car you probably aren't making sure everything else is up to spec. When is the last time you flushed the brake fluid, show us a pic of the reservior. Probably could have spent the same amount of time and $$ doing maintenence that might actually increase the life of the car rather than cutting it up.
Not flaming, I just see this sort of crap all the time. Coil-overs on a 10yr old FD with the original fuel filter, etc.

This mod has the right idea... i've seen the same done and routed to a scoop on the passenger oil cooler opening. its tough though... if you start looking around under there, you'll realize that mazda did everything it could to PREVENT there being a way to route a hose from engine compartment to that opening.!
I would keep working on it a bit to keep it from hanging below the car... maybe you could mount a NACA duct in the belly pan?
