My first RX7 and a question or two

Hi all,
I will pick up my first RX7 this week. It's a black 93 I purchased from a shop call Clean and Fast in Raliegh, Nc. The owner has been buying, modifying and selling only RX7's for over 15 years. All three gen's.

Mods
Street port, Hks downpipe, Blitz blowoff, Racing Beat dual tip chrome cat back, Racing Beat springs, Crossdrilled rotors, Boost guage, AF guage, B&M short shifter, Racing Beat type II rear wing and side skirts.

I went down and took a look at the progress last week. It was on the lift and we put the wing and skirts on it to just see. Wow, one tough looking car. It's screaming for some wheel and tires. Volk, Racing Hart.... Will Rishie ship cross country and is it worth it?

The engine is brand new. I only stopped with those mods cause I was out of money. I have plans to do more in time and am counting on good advice from the people here. I love this site. Outstanding to say the least. BTW the springs and rotors were a bonus. He got them off a wrecked car he purchased. I almost got them for free.

I'm already considering upgrading the intercooler, bigger injectors, fuel pump, and the Power FC. If I do this, what else will I need to do along with it?

This is my first non Detroit sports car. I'm a newbie to all this but learning quickly. That leads to my next question. At what point does one consider a car "riced up?" What's an FD, FC? Is there a section on lingo around here? Thanks in advance.

Andrew

Intake and shocks i guess since you didnt list them. If you havnt replace all the hoses to silicone ones yet do that. FD stands for 3rd gen and FC stands for 2nd gen. Good luck with the car.

Since this is your first Japanese supercar, stop modding your car and drive it. Mods are great and make for the bling bling factor, but until you drive your car properly you're just wasting the money.

What's your plan for the car? Drags? Road race? Auto-X? Depending on what you want to do, that'll change the direction you go with your mods. Simply modding the car to hell isn't going to make it *better* just more expensive.

Quite honestly, until you can see what the car can do with what you've got already, it's really not worth modding it because you'll have no basis for comparison.

Oh yeah...since you're looking at a ported motor and have a DP and catback, you might think about the PFC as your only soon-ish mod, since it'll help you take care of boost.

Good luck with it!

He states all "three" gens, not specifically modding only "third" gens

Actually I'm with ejmack1 when he said "three" gens as all 3 generations not 3rd gen only IMO.

Oh yeah when you get you're car posts some pics so we can take a look at, sounds pretty sweet so far.

You sould do a backround check on the car. I bought an RX7 from Jerry at Clean & Fast with no motor and no tranny and he some how neglected to mention it was from the salvage yard and the frame was bent. I found
out that it had a rebuilt title when I got it in the mail. I'll never buy anything from that POS again.

Sorry, the FD is a great sports car, but a SUPERCAR?? Thats a pretty big stretch. I don't even consider my (recently supercharged) C5 corvette coupe to be a supercar. But whatever.........

Don't blow that streetported motor before you get the fuel mods.

I wouldn't touch the boost until you do something.

When the FD came out, it was solidly in the top echelon of performance cars. The 93 R1 outhandled almost every production car made and the acceleration was certainly competetive. I agree, it's not a supercar in the sense of the McClaren F1, but it DOES qualify as a Japanese supercar.

BTW, with a streetport, dp, and catback, you should definitely be investing in a PowerFC very soon. I would restrict boost to 10 psi until you get it.

I guess my "all three gens" was a bit ambiguous. Sorry about that. I'll be more specific in the future.

Kundo: Pics to come. As soon as I pick it up and spend a few days getting to know the car. I hate to post pics until I get some new wheels but I will. It's begging me for some new shoes. Should be at the paint shop now.
I'm more than anxious at this point.

Thanks to all for the tips. The boost control issue will be next. For now 10psi is it. Until I learn more about these engines, somebody else will be doing all the tuning.

Silvio: Sorry to hear Jerry screwed you. This car was a repo and not trashed. I have been very specific with Jerry and I thought I had researched him thoroughly. I sure hope he doesn't make it a practice to treat people in the manner he treated you.

Ryan: Don't blow the streetported motor before I get the fuel mods? As long as I leave the boost below 10psi will I be ok for now?

And a question for all of you. With the mods I listed, what do you think the RWHP should be? 300? Am I dreaming here or what?

I've owned and driven some hot muscle cars in my day. My last was a 72 Novs SS 6.80's @108 1/8 mile. Drove it to the track and back home. Not a real street car however. I just want this car to be a good all around performer. It won't see AutoX or the strip. Just a head turning hot street car that is still drivable. Ok, so it might go to the strip once or twice!
