VA My fd start up...please look

My 1994 rx7 Fd streetported t78 engine

A short video of what it sounds like....

Short cliff notes:

1. SMOKE = vaseline packed engine
2. Metal on metal sound = We are diagnosing that right now. Sounds to be coming from the rear housing or flywheel/clutch area. Crossing my fingers is not a messed up rotor or apex seal. Both are brand new. The builder did an awesome job on this motor and gave me a warranty the on start up. Wait til he hears this. I'm really hoping it is not the engine.

blk on blk

I have to say - Props on the black engine paint... I was looking into the black wrinkle finish, but your setup with the regular gloss black looks kickass too!
P.S. I hope you figure out the knock. Keep us posted!

Does it make the same noise when the clutch pedal is pushed in or pushed out? My car has a similar sound with the clutch, i know many FDs do, but when the clutch is in, the noise goes away. If it is that, it might be a worn throw out bearing, so ive been told. But its not a problem.

Is not really a knock. It's more like a metal rubbing against another metal. I already started to take the intake manifold back off and a few friends came over to find out if we could find the noise by turning the engine over with a ratchet/socket. We found that when turned over manually there is one spot in the rotation where the engine seems to either bind/hit a piece of metal. I'm also not counting out the flywheel/clutch/counter weight area for inspection. I really think the noise is coming from right around there.

Well the throw out bearing is brand new and i greased it when I installed it, BUT!!!!!!!!!! I have not blead or added any fluid to the brake MC, so the clutch pedal is all the way to the floor. Could that be it? Like I said before I'm really leaning towards a flywheel/clutch/pp/ or counter wait problem.

The noise kinda sounds like a bolt is too long bearly hitting another metal part.

Did you redline it in the video? How much vacuum are you pulling at idle? Did you do a compression test after the engine was sealed up? Has the smoke cleared?

[QUOTE=andrewdruiz;7720704]Did you redline it in the video? [/qoute]

no

How much vacuum are you pulling at idle?
didnt even cross my mind. I was focusing on the engine noise and the leaks right after we shut it down. I only ran it for about a total of 4 minutes to take some footage. The noise was apperent on initial start up.

Did you do a compression test after the engine was sealed up?
no

Has the smoke cleared?
I was told it would smoke for around an hour. So no. I didnot run the engine that long.

my engine makes this knocking against metal sound when i sea foam the **** out of it and its lagging like hell while sucking in the seafoam...the whole engine starts knocking sounds like its the rear rotor, but im pretty sure its just **** bolted to the engine

could simply be crap knocking because your engine isn't broken in yet and is shaking w/ the rpms

This could not be a normal noise I dont think. I have a better video to show you guys. I'm waiting for youtube to upload it. I would be scared to run / build an engine for no more than I did on the current condition.

that sound is similar to my clutch sound but that one is very loud. I cant hear mine outside of the car, and its soft inside the car.

bleed your clutch and push the clutch pedal in and out and see if the sound changes.

Sound like a blown gasket. Had the same lawnmower noise (new 99 twins/HKS downpipe). The HKS wasn't sitting flush and needed to be ground down slightly but this cause the gasket to blown and give me that annoying lawnmower sound.
Good luck.

That would make sense, after listening to it again.

nice car man and good luck with it

SIDE NOTE:
I recently had a metal to metal sound that i tracked down for a month or two. I would get noise mostly on a cold start where the engine was a lil shaky but the noise would go away when the clutch was pushed it

Solution: all mine shifter bolts were sorta loose cause the shifter to make all sorts of metal to metal noises

A couple of random notes:

--It could be a major exhaust leak, somewhere around the turbo/downpipe/wastegate.

--Why are you revving the car when your oil pressure gauge reads zero? do you have another gauge?

--I recommend fixing your throttle cable mounting brackets before it catches on fire . In the vid it looks like it's right above the downpipe.

--Tons of smoke, no motor I've ever built has smoked like that, and I use liberal amounts of hylomar and engine assembly lube.

--The motor definitely doesnt sound that good. it's hard to tell though.

And why is your temp gauge pegged out with the add coolant light on?

Nice looking car though, very unique.
