My experience with the ebay SMIC

I'm bored and I jsut want to state my opinion on the eBay intercooler "xspower". At first I was a little skeptical on this smic due to reading 50/50 negative and positive feed backs here on the forum. So far I'm loving this intercooler. I dont have the shroud yet made by twinturbo_se7en here on the forum but it is on its way. I get full boost on my non-seq twins close to 3,500. I'm running the manual boost controller any my boost holds steady around 12-13 no spikes no creeping. I'm using the blitz bov since the flange that comes with the ebay intercooler fits the blitz bov perfectly. i have a microtech lt-8 street tuned with my setup (still running stock injectors though) dp, exhaust, koyo rad (160 temps with fans on constant) and some other small mods Bottom line is that if you are short on cash, and need a nice intercooler for a small price (yes i know its an fd and you shouldnt be going the cheap way on parts) then try out the ebay smic. im not in any way affiliated with the ssautochrome guy but like i said, its a nice intercooler for the price. one thing... shave off the big xspower logo on it. thanks for reading this and keep your negative **** out of here because i dont want to hear it, but if you have some helpful tips advice then lets hear it. peace

You started a thread and then didn't actually post any "experience" about the intercooler itself!

How much did boost increase when going from the stock to XS intercooler? Under the same conditions, how much did your intake air temps drop? What was your difficulty in mounting it and fabricating piping for it?

Well, this forum is open to anyone. As long as people don't break forum rules, they are free to post THEIR opinion on the matter.

ok with the stock intercooler i had full boost around 4.5-5k and now i get the 12-13psi at 3,500. only pain in the *** was getting the piping form the smic to the ypipe i had to cut it about a half inch to get it to fit under the strut bar. if you have a koyo and you have A/C you will need to lower the radiator and condensor down a good 3 inches, make come custom brackets for the condensor OR do what i did and hold up the condensor to the radiator but put some 1 1/2 inch spacers between the rad and the cond but make sure you lower it a good 3 inches si the hood can close.

At least show us some pics! Some before and after install info would help alot. Alot of us are interested in getting a FMIC. Since most of the kits availible are in the 1k range compared to the few hundred range just for the IC on Ebay, I think most of us would like to know how you did the piping, the final cost, and level of effort to get it all together.

Oops, I'm a bit late...

Plz don't come around these forums w/ that type of foul mouth. Not everyone's a 9th grade high schooler - or talks like one. Be respectful, and express yourself in a mature fashion.

Thanks
~Ramy

PS: And for the effort you described, with vauge at best results, I'm not sure it was worth the money at all...

PPS: Who on EARTH gets full boost at 4.5K - 5K rpm on stock parallel twins? Dear God...I know good sized SINGLE TURBOS which spool faster than that!! I think you're WAYY off, or embellishing

make this thread worth something and post your intake temps if you can. im also curious as to why your koyo had to drop 3 inches, was it because of the core size or because of the pipes? pics would be nice as well man, thanks.

Now these things are starting on ebay for 99.99 no reserve. I'm thinking about picking one up for cheap and sending it Kevin T. Wyum so he can have Spearco actually test the efficiency of the core. I doubt the results will be very good, but it can't be worse than stock!

My PFS SMIC is in the mail though. Can't wait!

That would be sweet if you did that afterburn. I think the price for an aftermaket intercooler is a steal but i hate the look.

I thought about getting one of these...the price definitely looks attractive but then you read all the negative experiences on them and it really pushed me away...I ended up getting the Greddy FMIC...

The pipe kits are 99.99 no reserve, not the intercooler. It caught me off guard too

I was going to do it myself and pay for all of it but the people that always post about the ebay stuff said they wouldn't believe any of it even if it came straight from Spearco. Facts don't matter so I wouldn't waste any effort and certainly not any money if I were you.

Seriously. I swear this forum is becoming crappier by the day. All the great guys are posting less and less, and everything's becoming troubleshooing the same old few problems...no interesting discussions anymore. Where's another buttplug thread argument when you need one?!?!

make this thread worth something and post your intake temps if you can. im also curious as to why your koyo had to drop 3 inches, was it because of the core size or because of the pipes? pics would be nice as well man, thanks.
Uhh...did you see him post that his non-seq. twins were making full boost at 4500 - 5,000 rpm??? Uhh...I wouldn't exactly take any data he provides as fact. No offense. Either that, or he's got an xspower boost gauge too!

my experience with SS stuff is that i bought a T4 turbo, and upon looking inside, i saw some shiny bits. I tipped it up, and metal shavings came out of the compressor outlet where theyd drilled and tapped the housing and not bothered to clean it up.

I never used it.

I agree this is an old topic and reduntant as hell. Why would Spearco test the SS autochrome intercooler anyway? I guess if Kevin was going to pay for it. I have this intercooler and I found it to be a very good deal. I made custom pipes for $40 and it fit nicely. I took detailed pics of it inside and out. The welds are nice, no metal shavings, and the core is bar and plate. Kevin even stated that it is an old design but not a bad one. Everyone agreed that it is worth the price as an alternative over stock! Not that it is better than other IC's on the market. I wish I had some documentation as to the performance of it, but I am still fabing a custom duct different from Sean's, which is top notch and definately the way to go if you have one of these. I will report when done. I already posted extensive pics in the 20 page thread about this. I am still not convinced there is a negative side to this part. I am all ears to those that have some "first hand" negative experiences with this intercooler. I respect everyones opinion, but that just might be all it is. opinion. and frankly until it happens to me, I am satisfied completely
I thought about getting one of these...the price definitely looks attractive but then you read all the negative experiences on them and it really pushed me away...I ended up getting the Greddy FMIC...

No disrespect mpfcc but where is this negative proof. I have only seen unfounded bashing because of the price and that its on E-bay. Thanx
